Barbee
In the Brooder
I have been a lurker on this site since about two years when we first were considering chickens. We've raised up 18 straight run RIR chicks (rehomed 11 cockerels) and currently have 7 RIR's puttering around our backyard. We are also raising our 17 mail ordered sexed chicks; they are a mixed multitude of Black Australorps, Buff Orphingtons, Easter Eggers, and Barred Plymouth Rocks. We are a vegetarian family, homesteading in the Southern parts of the United States.
As a newbie to chicken raising, I didn't realize how much personality each chicken could have. I have bonded with my girls, and yes, with our roosters as well (although RIR males can be ornery). We kept both males due to their mostly kind personalities, and the fact that the boys are best bros. We are raising up this flock of chicks to give the boys a more equitable amount of mates, and to allow our existing hens a much needed break.
I love reading (when time allows), writing creatively, and researching all things chicken, gardening, and am learning to knit.
During my research prior to obtaining chickens I stumbled upon this forum and have visited it on an at least weekly basis. I find the information here so helpful, that I figured it was time to join in the fun, as my experience grows. I have already learned so much from many of you and am grateful for the information you all have shared on the raising of backyard chickens. I look forward to chatting with you all.
Bonus: while waiting to hear from the Post office about my chicks' arrival reading the BYC threads on folks waiting for their mail order chicks kept me sane, and definitely kept my anxiety down.
