I am so excited to join this site. My husband and I finally put our foot down and doing our "retirement bucket list". We decided better now than never. We sold our big house, temporarily moved into an apartment, starting on our new little retirement cottage. We are going green - as much as possible. We are going to be self-sufficient - as much as possible. First and foremost - CHICKENS! We are going to start our new 'organic' mini-farm and chickens as soon as our cottage is finished. We are downsizing in life and needs. We cant wait to get started with our chickens - cant believe my husband is partaking and his excitement about this is revving up mine! lol! I look forward to reading posts here and learning from the guru's. God Bless! Onward Chickens!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on the move and good luck with all your plans! A great place to start is the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken/ poultry keeping you'll find useful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and be sure you check out the Coops section for ideas

When you start considering breeds, here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds.

Here is a nice thread that lists organic topics or other green threads https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/283192/organic-topics-index And it is always fun to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread

You will love our sister site, SufficientSelf.com. There are some wonderful discussions on all things self-sufficient and green living etc. Also have a look at TheEasyGarden.com for when you start thinking about getting a garden going and BackYardHerds.com for other livestock. Enjoy the sites and your new ventures!

Nothing better than going self sufficient. Knowing where your food comes from and being able to grow it yourself.
