Name is Robert & I'm 27 yrs old. Me and the wife have been looking for a new home. We've put a few offers on some homes all with 3+ acres. I grew up with farming parents, horses, cows, chickens, ducks, dogs, rabbits, and etc.

Been a dream for a yr or so now to find some nice land and buy a few chickens. Of course I have some questions:

I'm kind of a big softy....not much on killing animals I see on a day to day basis. I do hunt, but that's a different story I guess. I'd like to buy 5 hens and they'd end up being spoiled rotten. If I want chickens that are friendly (the kind I can walk up to and pet) - Should I get eggs and hatch them so they imprint on me? Or would day-week olds be just as friendly?

The home I have an offer on right now is 3 acres in a country housing addition. They allow ALL live stock except pigs and........that's right, CHICKENS! LOL. Do you think someone would notice 5 chickens roaming around?

Also, the fence is about 5 ft high and they can't get out due to possible law intervention. If I clip wings, how high can they get up?

Last question - What bread is the friendliest, most eye pleasing and best egg layers? Like a good combo of all 3 things?

Thanks Ya'll !! Hope to be around for awhile!

OH! And P.S. I notice that majority here are female (nothing wrong with that!!!) but is owning chickens like demascalating (sp?)?

Edit: P.P.S.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

New to owning them myself. I have been around chickens in my younger years.

Sussex are my recommendation to meet your needs. Day olds will do fine! If you clip their wings they should stay put. Some breeds can still fly with clipped wings, but not them. I hope you enjoy the forum!

from SoCal! Make the search button your friend and you will find every subject known to raising chickens. I ordered my day olds from Mypetchicken.com They have a great info sheet on the different breeds attributes and laying traits. Handle your babies several times a day- hold n cuddle- and when older hand feed them lil treats and they will be very friendly. Good luck!

from washington state!
I will try to answer some of your questions
No, I do not think chcikens are is demasculating in any way, There are actually a lot of men on here. Maybe its just a "forum" thing, more women on forums?
I think if you really want chickens, it wouldn't be the greatest thing on moving to a place that bans them. Laws can be changed, (and there s a whole section on this forum about that) but if you are intentionally breaking rules, the outcome usually isn't the greatest. All it takes is just one person to report you, and you have a battle. Kinda like iof someone moves into an apartment that bans dogs, and gets a puppy, someone is going to find out, and they may not tell you, but then again why risk it?
About what kind of chicken to get....Pretty much every "chicken person" has an opinion on that lol I myself have orpingtons, eater eggers, australorps and dominiques, I am happy with all of them. I got most of them as day olds, and they are quite freindly, enough so that if I squat down next to them most will hop up on my leg.
