Very new to chickens, previous experience is helping my grandmother with her flock occasionally. I now have five in my flock, one rooster, four hens, all about 3 months old. Black Australorps! Did a lot of research, but fell in love when I read about them. Couldn't say no when I came across the chicks, lucked out with Brooster. (Brooster the rooster, geddit?) They were supposed to all be female.

Anyway, we've got Brooster, Hannibal (the dominant hen so far, big and bossy), Isabelle (the only show quality australorp out of the bunch) and Maude and Clawd (both little and submissive, very gentle, totally indistinguishable from each other). My mother keeps rabbits, but I think I prefer chickens.

I've heard a lot of good things about the breed. You will be very pleased once they start laying. Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock.

so glad you have joined us.

Rabbits are so cute and lovable, but wonder if they have as much personality as our chickens:)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and my granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Australorps.

Good luck with your flock!
