Howdy!

Hi y’all! My name is Dawn and I live in Evansville IN with my hubby and critters :) I had baneys for a couple years then a couple of Rhode Island Red Roos for a couple years. This time I been all the way up to 18 ( was working on 24) until the little devil aka the raccoon came visiting. I don’t sell my chickens as they are my damas, my ladies. I sell the extra eggs at work to the ladies who can no longer raise their own. My world has been shattered this last 2 weeks losing over half my poor girls all of which I’ve had since they were couple days old. I’d love to get into some silkies and polish - but scared to now until I know they’d be safe. Anyways- hiya and have a great day all!
Welcome neighbor, I’m from Illinois so we are relatively close! I definitely feel your pain, I have been there before. It’s a pain that is hard to put in words, you want chickens yet don’t want to knowingly put them in harms way. I have been doing this since I was 8 (currently 25years old) and growing up on a farm and I’ll say this, it’s a balancing act in these situations. A hard truth is losing chickens is inevitable, you will always lose some and it never gets easier. All you can do is learn how the predators in your area work and do your best to secure your coop, but remember no coop is completely 100% predator proof. I have a literal Fort Knox for a coop and I still loose some to predators every so often. You can’t let this setback stop you from doing what you love. I say take a good look at your coop and take some pictures and post it to the coop forums here and ask for advice on what can be more secure. From there secure your coop and start again. You got this and I’m certain that in no time you will feel safe enough to get those silkies and polish! I wish you all the best and luck on this!
