My 2 teenage kids and I are newbies to raising and taking care of barnyard fowl. We started with 3 turkeys May 3rd with the plan of raising them to eat at thanksgiving and Christmas. But now we are so attached I doubt we will be eating themail unless they become aggressive. They talk to us and come sit in our laps to be loved on. We noticed last night that 2 of the turkeys were strutting around all puffed up and their wings dropped. We are assuming this means they are Tom's.
On Monday we purchased 3 Delaware chicks and 3 Barred Rock chicks along with a goose.
We have been told that geese would be good at taking care of our tick problem and would stay at home unlock guinea hens who like to roam.
We have a pen set up, with a small coop, but I am hoping I can let them out to roam the yard. The turkeys and the goose should be big enough to stand up to our dogs. I picked the chicks for their size, egg laying, and personality.
