Southeast Texas here, specifically Woodville, a little town that nobody's heard of.

I live on three acres in deep country. We can't see the neighbors and they can't see us, though they can hear my roosters. Nice.

I have a flock of frizzles (around 25 or less), both black and white in color. Also some young "pre-teen" silkies. I've had chickens for quite a few years, though last year and this they were decimated by foxes, snakes, hawks, and racoons. The coop has been redone so that nothing at all can get in anymore.

I also have dairy goats, hogs, geese, and horses, which keep me busy.

Looking forward to talking lots of chicken stuff!

Do your birds also have a predator proof , covered run? If they free range, the same critters will just ambush them outside.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas. Be sure and use hardware cloth on your coop rather than chicken wire as there are too many predators that can tear through chickens wire, or squeeze through the openings in the mesh. Also make sure that your coop door is either padlocked or has a double action latch on it as raccoons have no problem figuring out how to open a single action latch. There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html on predator proofing your chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
