Hehe. We keep on going back and forth because he thinks we're creating Fort Knox and I want to lock them up every night. Right now he's digging a trench 1 foot deep and is putting that horse fencing, I think that's what it is, in. That's what we were going to put around the run, and he agreed to put it on top, and we have hardwire on the coop windows. We might put hardwire at the base of the fence all around too so things can't stick their hands in and grab them.

See he IS handy. They can't help the occasional idiot thing. It's part of their DNA.

Tell him you are SUPPOSED to build a Fort Knox for a night pen. Otherwise you don't have chickens for long.

cover the run with welded wire or add an electric fence that runs along the bottom of the run and along the top. But then you could lose power, that is why i opted for welded wire.

OK , I can't not put my two cents in.
I have read way to many sad stories about "the one night someone forgot to close up their chickens".
They should go in on their own.If they don't ,write again and someone will help you with training.
Then lock them up no matter what.

Good Luck....and what a sweet husband to help you with your coop.
He just does not know what he does not know...

I talked to hubby and he said we do have welded wire that he is going to instal. We also have solar panels and quite the battery backup system, see he is handy, but I don't think electrical fence would be a good idea since the chickens are pretty close to my kid's slide.

They go in on their own. We just got a rooster last night and he already went to bed. He tried calling the ladies to go in too but they don't listen to him yet.

Are your kids sliding after dark? That's when you turn on the electric fence -- to deter climbers.

And it sounds like your husband is coming around. Good thing.
