Ok, I was looking around the yard for eggs, incase my little oegb was hideing them, so i lifted up a few peices of wood, and holy moly, there was this long long snake, it did not look like your average garden snake.
it was brown with darker brown squere patches on it.

so i place wood down quitily and called hubby over, oner my chickens saw it went closer to it, just as i grabed her tail feathers and pulled her away the snake actully wnt and hissed and tried to bite her.

it missed.

I told hubby careful becouse it was going to bite the chicken, so he grabbed a shovel to , and teh thing bite the tip of his boot, he was not going to kill it, thinking maybe it is a garden snake, well when the thing starting hissing and trying to attack him, he slammed the pointed shovel on it, the snake was really trying to bite, it kept biteing his boots.

well he finnaly killed it.

but what kind of snake do you guys think it was?

I di not see any eggs, do tehy bury them, if a snake bites a chicken will it hurt them.

you may want to have this moved to the predator and pests side, especially if you are adding pics

Most state DNRs have a listing with descriptions and pics of the snakes in their area. Google "snakes of MA" and see what you find.

The squares pattern on brown sounds a bit like a copperhead to me. But be sure you check for your area.

Sounds kind of like a Pacific Gopher Snake with the coloring and size....but kinda outta its jurisdiction. A picture of snake and it's head would be helpful. If it was a rat snake, it was probably just helping keep down your rodent population as chicken coops can be sources of good eats!

If it had a checkerboard pattern, it's a garter snake. Totally harmless, just eating bugs. Any snake will bite if threatened. Probably put out a musky scent, too.
