Hubby killed a snake yesterday!! What kind was it? pic added

If it was a copperhead snake, you were good to put it down, as they eat baby chicks/kittens/rabbits and will bite you and kids, dangerous. We have them around here and you can't be too careful around them. Otherwise, you may have killed your best mousetrap. I really like snakes though, even when they eat my wild birds eggs, I know they are just hungry.

that is a vary common color patern...what is your definition of long long? I had an eight foot snake at one point so 4 footers aren't long...and 3 foot is impressive for a praire rattler but is nothing for a diamond back.

copper heads aren't that bad...in fact there isn't anti-venom for the bite. deaths from them are almost non-existant...death happens because of an alergic reaction not from the actual toxicity...some damage and swelling and pain but you will live...

just another animal...they are there nothing to totally freak about...

Depends on the person as to the degree of damage. We have a neighbor who's son was bite twice and he spent days in the hospital and has permanent organ damage. Any bite by a venomous snake requires proper medical attention.

If that is the case (illegal to kill, harass, etc) , next time you should contact your local fish and wildlife. They probably have a removal service or can recommend a legal alternative to dealing with poisonous snakes.

Was it's skin shiny or more of a flat (matte) finish? If shiny it wasn't a copperhead- more likely a milk or corn snake (totally harmless). If it was matte finish it could be a copperhead but several varieties of non-poisonous water snake are marked similarly and can be ill-tempered. I'm not sure what you have in MA (I moved away when I was 6) but the hissing makes me think it could have also been a hog-nosed snake.... did it's nose turn up as if the tip of it had been pressed against something? They're also called a puff adder but are totally harmless.
