I always keep my eyes open for new houses or other buildings being built, apartments being refurbished, or buildings being torn down.
There is always a big dumpster out front full of scrap materials. The construction company has to pay for each pound that goes to the landfill, so I look for someone to ask permission, & mention this and then ask if I might take some materials and lighten their load. I have done this at more than 5 sites and not been turned down. If no one is around to ask & you feel confident, you can just dive in anyway. As long as you are careful to not get hurt, & you straighten up around the dumpster after, you offer a benefit to the company.
You would not believe how much pressboard, & how many 2x4s, 2x6s, hardware, & other misc. I have gleaned through construction dumpster diving!
