Hubby says no chickens. No funds for coop

I always keep my eyes open for new houses or other buildings being built, apartments being refurbished, or buildings being torn down.

There is always a big dumpster out front full of scrap materials. The construction company has to pay for each pound that goes to the landfill, so I look for someone to ask permission, & mention this and then ask if I might take some materials and lighten their load. I have done this at more than 5 sites and not been turned down. If no one is around to ask & you feel confident, you can just dive in anyway. As long as you are careful to not get hurt, & you straighten up around the dumpster after, you offer a benefit to the company.

You would not believe how much pressboard, & how many 2x4s, 2x6s, hardware, & other misc. I have gleaned through construction dumpster diving!

as a guy maybe i shouldnt say what im about to say but go out to his man cave and just start throwing stuff together just to get it started and break ground if you will, and before you know it he'll help and gradually take over and do it himself especially if you find stuff free and sounds like you both have talked about it so its not something unreasonable. GOODLUCK

Everyone has great advice here, I also was going to suggest the pallet thing, but also there are great things at thrift stores like old shelving and other furniture. Also look aroung at yard and garage sales. I got 10X10 chainlink dog run from a yard sale for super cheap.

Good luck, I hope you can get 'er figured...

Hey all. I am going to start accumulating stuff. Got a line on skids for free. Started a new job that makes pet supplies. He mentioned rabbits. I thought about those too. I don't want those because they spend their whole life in a cage and don't get to be rabbits like in the wild. Chickens would have a good life right till it was time for them to go to freezer camp. I know animals were put on earth for us to use for food and working. But still want them to have a life. I won't eat veal for that very reason. May sound stupid to some, but that;s the way I feel.

As far as standing my ground, after over 27 years of marriage, I've learned that life is a lot easier if everything is his way. If it isn't, life gets miserable fast. I know it isn't fair. Just the way it is.
