Hubby's dogs killed wife's birds - no more chickens or different dogs?

chickens+dogs :

Thanks for your advice on dog breeding. I've read a little bit about it, and exactly what you said is what I've been reading. Our dogs are not show dogs and we didn't get them to show or breed. However, the thought did enter my mind, which is why I did a little reading on the subject. The more I read, the more I don't want to be involved with that process. We just wanted dogs for protection and companionship. Now we're working on figuring out how to sure-up our chicken coop so we can have chickens again. Then we'll plant a couple of vegetable beds, give the dogs more training and lay some brick in the back yard so we can sit back on our patio, play with our dogs, and eat fresh eggs and veggies!

Oh yeah, and get up and go to work 5 days a week (aargh!) Retirement ain't comin' soon enough!

I thought I read, you were going to lay some bricks (ya know, like lay eggs?) All I could see was a person squatting and a brick just popping out somewhere!!!

Yeah, retirement isn't too far off.
Anyways, sorry if I sounded like an ass - I'm surrounded by all these BYBs and it just ticks me off... I knew a few people who bred cats and dogs who had issues... just for fun

well, a few were for fun, the others didn't think to spay or neuter their cats and produced cats who died, had screwed up issues (bent tails, extra toes and very bad bone structures - one shorter leg or a crooked leg or foot) which still proves them guilty.

It's hard to walk away and "avoid" it, but don't want to cause trouble in a small community. Trying to figure out a good way

to fix this!

As for dog training, a well-trained dog is a WONDERFUL addition!

Good luck on that! And enjoy it

people will admire you!!! Don't worry, retirement is like what/ 40 years away for me? 35??? too LONG!!

A nice hot wire along outside the coop along the base will deter those hounds...you can have your cake and eat it too. wink Juice up those pups!

Yeahp, I agree fully agree with Beekissed. The e-wire is the way to go - a dog only has to touch it once perhaps twice and they get the message...That being said, seeing as how they are diggers - the only way to really deter them may be e-collars. Either the type with the buried wire that the dogs can't cross or alternatively give them all collars and watch and wait for them to go after the birds and then (this is going to make me sound like an awful person) shock the hell out of them.

I have a dalmation and my in-laws have a lab - both of which love(d) grabbing the chickens but especially my poor defenseless pullets! This was fixed with a Dogtra e-collar (www.dogtra.com)....I just waited for them to give the chickens a prod with their noses and I shocked them (level 35 out of 100 levels). Now, the dogs won't even go on that corner of the property. Tis most excellent! Oh, and I fully recommend that your neighbors test out the collars on themselves; on the arm - not the neck!

I hope this helps your neighbors....

Had the same thing happen with my dogs. They killed some of my best birds. Actually it was only one of my dogs. He is now in a pen with bricks all around the inside of the pen. Flagstone and various other bricks. He doesnt get out now. It was a simple solution. I am hoping to get a dog that will protect my birds that will free roam the place. I did't read every response on here so I probably missed some of the options of good dogs. Maybe a llama would do the job. The only bad thing is it doesn't keep the birds from flying into the dog pen, sadly Ive had 3 do it.
