I wish I had some ambition lately. This weather has me in such a rut. Yesterday I just watched the Olympics all day, and I hate Tv! Spring can't come soon enough.

chickengirl1193 what do you use to start your seeds? Every time I start seeds in the house (in those peat pot trays) they get leggy and then keel over and die before I can get them transplanted into the garden. Do you put them in larger containers at some point before transferring them outside?I hear ya. OK, thanks! I'm going to start some seeds soon and will make sure I have some larger flats ready as well. We went on a cruise in late May last year. The day we came back it was 40 deg. and as I recall, it stayed pretty cool for awhile. After that, we had those torrential rains. We didn't get to plant anything until late June. I'd spent a LOT of $ on herbs that got flooded so I started over with the herbs...by the time I was able to plant the vegetables, I was kind of ready to give up. I only planted a few tomato plants which did fairly well....the cucumbers rotted before they matured, and the zucchini became infested w/those stink-bug type squash bugs so last year's garden was kind of a bust !!Thats always happened to me in the past so this year we have a series of progressively larger flats to transplant into until they go outside. Ill let you know how it goes! We have never had much success with starting seeds inside lol so thats why we started early this year
How's this for a "chicken newbie":: Last year I planted sunflowers from seed...was all excited for them to provide some shade and to save the heads for seeds for the winter. AND! I was so proud I didn't kill the seedlings! SO...when they were a few inches high, I planted them all around the run and DUH...didn't realize the girls could stick their little chicken heads through the hardware cloth and eat them.I forgot, follwing the advice of Laura Ingalls Wilder -grow sunflowers and save the heads for winter chicken bordom busters and feed booster. Also instead of composting your garden plants in fall, store them in a root cellar or shed and dole them out to your chickens over the winter for extra greens.
