Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Yeah straw in the run is a good idea. I'm sure the chickens will enjoy that to... after the next few days of crappy weather I'll put some straw down also. My run is on a slope tho..

Seriously..I have about 4" of mud in the run. The rest of the yard is 3"-deep puddles and mud. SO glad I bought a pair of rain boots. They're not warm, but they keep my feet dry in this crapola! I heard the temps are going to drop later so everything will be ice again. Hang in there...winter is almost over (I hope).

Oh good, a Hudson valley thread. I have no chickens at the moment but put a huge order of 30 chicks in. We just moved and rehomed what was left of our previous flock after a bear discovered them. That said I have not had to deal with chickens in this weather but am sick of it none the less.

I have already started planting, but my 2 year old keeps picking them. I got a nice grow light to help them grow strong. I guess veggies will just have to be enough to occupy me until my chicks get hear. I should get them around mid May. I ordered late.

I will be getting blr wyandotte, Ameraucana, marans, bielefelders, isbars, icelandics, and American bresse. I will have a few extras if anyone is interested. I'm just so excited to be getting chicks. I just cant wait.:D

Lisa, that is to funny, I definitely relate

I am in barryville which is technically the catskills. its not to far from Port Jervis. As for the bear he was in the neighbors garbage for years. every couple of days they would be torn up and he would clean up but never put the cans in the garage. he retired and moved south. no more food for the bear. bear came to my yard 2:30 in the afternoon 20 minutes after me and my 3 boys were playing outside. one of my sons spotted him. we were watching from the window, the dogs were going crazy but the bear didn't mind. the chickens didn't seem to bothered by the bear, they just kept their distance. the bear did not seem interested in the chickens. Then my sons silkie pops out of the Bush and walks up to the bear. the bear picked it up and that was that. I ran out after the bear screaming the dogs got out too. it was my 12 lb minpin who chased off the bear but it was to late for the silkie. then the other silkie disappeared. then every night the bear raided the coop until he went into hibernation. I gave away the rest of my flock after that.
