Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

I am in barryville which is technically the catskills. its not to far from Port Jervis. As for the bear he was in the neighbors garbage for years. every couple of days they would be torn up and he would clean up but never put the cans in the garage. he retired and moved south. no more food for the bear. bear came to my yard 2:30 in the afternoon 20 minutes after me and my 3 boys were playing outside. one of my sons spotted him. we were watching from the window, the dogs were going crazy but the bear didn't mind. the chickens didn't seem to bothered by the bear, they just kept their distance. the bear did not seem interested in the chickens. Then my sons silkie pops out of the Bush and walks up to the bear. the bear picked it up and that was that. I ran out after the bear screaming the dogs got out too. it was my 12 lb minpin who chased off the bear but it was to late for the silkie. then the other silkie disappeared. then every night the bear raided the coop until he went into hibernation. I gave away the rest of my flock after that.
Barryville is so close! I am actually considering enrolling my DD in the Homestead school up that way. My grandmother was born and raised in Barryville. Her mother had a boarding house up there. I went to Port Jervis High School (Montague doesn't have one). My cousin had a place in Glen Spey, I know she always had problems with the bears up there.

Uuuugh, what was that little bird thinking? Why do they do things like that. Your poor son must have been devastated.

One day last summer, my daughter was playing outside in the sprinkler. I was working in the garden and had just gone inside to get us some water. She came bolting in the back door screaming "bear... bear by the coop". Now, I was far more concerned that it walked right into the yard while we were outside. I imagine it had been there for a while and neither of use saw it. I was just watching the chickens and sitting there. I tried noise making, rocks, car horn, the dog out, etc, It didn't budge. They are so brazen here. My uncle (who lives next door) stung it with a bb gun twice and it finally ran off and didn't come back. We had another, much, much, larger bear, maybe 40 inches or so at the shoulders. He scares me. A. Lot. especially when I am locking up the coop at night in the spring. He was sitting in the driveway one day and I didn't even notice him (I am much more careful now) when my daughter and I were going out to the car. We made it to the car, I started the engine, and drove up to him honking the horn. He looked at me, scratched his ear, got up and sauntered (yes, I said it) down the driveway at a snails pace. All the way down the road we went, like a parade. No scaring that guy off. Thankfully he doesn't seem overly aggressive toward people... for now. The crazy sow we get here in spring is a story for another day. She is small, often has twins and triplets, and is totally bat shiRt crazy. I never know what side of the house she is going to pop out on.

If a bear starts raiding my property for livestock I will have to apply for the "special permit" from fish and game. We have had them deal with several nuisance bears over the years, all of them developed problems secondary to being adapted to garbage can dining or people feeding them. My uncle heard a ruckus in his basement one night and went down the steps and flipped on the light to find a bear had broken in through his basement door and was raiding his pantry. Can you imagine? Yikes!!! I am not sure if people realize how much damage they do to these animals when they feed them. Before anyone says the bears were here before us, we have been on this property for 3 generations and there have never been any problems with bears until the past 10 years or so. Too many people with improper trash management and/or birdfeeders are tempting them out of the state park up the hill from us and there is less open farm land around (they don't like to cross those open fields when they can avoid) that allows them wooded alleys to get access to the residential areas. It is just a bit scary when your kids are out playing in the yard and would have no chance to make it to safety in time since we are wooded all around.

Too close for comfort!! That must have been terrifying :( Haven't seen a bear around here in quite some time but I'm sure they're around. We mostly have deer and hawks but we've heard coyote (from a distance). Haven't had a problem with them (yet). I suppose we'll be seeing a lot more predators soon. They're probably desperate for food.

Thats crazy about the bears... we just had one here last night around 1 am. It was garbage day yesterday so the cans were still out (empty) but I think my brothers put a bag in there not realizing it needed to be taken into the garage. The bear got to it and I heard and ran to the front door and yelled and he ran away thankfully. Then I checked my coops and goats and everyone was okay. But this morning my neighbor put a picture on Facebook from 1245 last night of the bear on her porch... she feeds the deer tho and inadvertently attracts the bears. Im going to need to up my security in my coops...

JerseyHen what abeautiful picture. your property is beautiful. I always try to fill my car up with gas in in Jersey just over the border. Its so nice to hear from someone familiar with the area. I heard the bear are bad by you and it was because of people and their mismanagement of garbage. If a bear wants something Bad enough he will get it. I don't think free range chickens have much to worry about during the day, but at night is a different story. I'm going to get some electric fence to put around my coops and only have it on at night. That's what people around here told me to do. This way if something comes sniffing around they get a shock on their nose and hopefully decide its not worth it before they figure out what it is. They also told me to shoot the bear. St that point if I had a gun it would have been done. Just like you said when they have no fear and are dependent on people for food they are dangerous and my kids and I like to be outside. For over 2 years the bear had been coming and never bothered the chickens. he did get to their feed once which had been left in a metal garbage can right outside the coop but never bothered to break in which would have been easy. I think your chickens will most likely be fine its you and the kids I'm more worried about, more so with the females and their cubs. Bears really aren't a problem by us because most people here do the right thing with their garbage. Bears are a problem for the beekeepers this area. serious keepers have guard dogs.

I wanted to send my kids to the homestead school in glen spey. it is wonderful but not something I can afford with 3 soon to be 4 boys.

LSzajko, for the most part we don't see much bear, ton of deer and hawks. We have heard the coyotes too. we had had a problem with a sick fox for a while. We even have a owl. we never see him but hear him and pound some owl pellets. We see a lot of bald eagles by me. surprisingly they have never gone after my chickens.

Yup, its a SLW!
Was a good day for free ranging! I can see grass !
Congrats on the broody!!
Way cool!!!! I love SLWs! That was the only one, right...?
It felt sooo good walking to the coops not having to worry about wiping out on ice.
Thank you!

I'm excited. When I let the Nuggets out this morning, one of the Buffs was in the nesting box so I opened that door to let some air in the coop figuring she would just hop out when she was done laying. Later on, I did a headcount from the kitchen window and there was only 6 wandering around and she was still in the nesting box. When I went to check on her, I got yelled at. She's sitting on 2 eggs. Mr. Blu is the Baby Daddy and she's a Buff Orp. IF the chicks hatch, what do you think they'll look like??

Yeah he/she is the only one :(
If your broody stays broody you will have some beautiful buff/blue colored chicks! They will be very pretty!
You have to post some pics of your broody mom to be!
