Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

I know the feeling. I just hatched out 17, they go to their new homes tomorrow and I am setting another 42 next month! Did I mention I have 30 in the brooder? I really need to finish building those breeding pens.
Whoa that's a lot of chicks JerseyHen! What breeds are you waiting on/hatching?

This last round was a cream crested legbar over my flock, so the are easter leggers? They should all carry the blue egg gene and give blue, green, and olive layers. The next round will be pure ccl, bantam birchen modern game, quail d'anvers, black and blue bantam sumatra, and bantam salmon faverolles. In the brooder i have spitzhaubens, brabanters, jaerhons (sp?), modern games (bbr and red pyle), golden lakenvelders, and golden hamburgs.

I just love a variety. My DD thinks it would be cooler if they laid different flavored eggs. I think she is right.

Thank you ~ !
How are your chickens doing?

They are doing well. One of the ducklings died. S/he was the last to hatch, 2 days after the others. After a week, the other 6 were so much bigger. I tried giving extra food, poultry drench to no avail. Failure to thrive?

My Mom was here visiting from CO last week while the kids were off. Nice visit, but glad to get back to real life.

I saw your post on the facebook mid-hudson farm swap group. Are you selling all your Orp babies?

Your coop/run setup must be huge and beautiful. Between your flocks and your gardens, I'm sure you're busy all the time! Your DD is right...variety is definitely more fun :) I think we're going to need another coop or build a really big one. DH is getting into this. He wants to buy a dozen hatching eggs in a few weeks. Right now we have:: 6 cornish X's in the garage 6 Orpington chicks 6 Orpington hens 1 Orpington JERK 10 assorted hens (my original flock) 20 eggs in the incubator (minus the duds after we candle them) And tonight DH's cousin is bringing over the 2 silkie chicks he bought from TSC that he isn't allowed to keep so why NOT bring them over to the chicken crazy relatives? And I have no idea how to integrate the silkies with the original girls after isolating them for a few weeks. I want to go home. I have no time for working.

Your next hatch sounds great. Nice variety. Any chance you'd be willing to sell any Cream Legbars? I have 3 cockerels that I hatched out three weeks ago. I want to trade a couple for a pullet or buy one.

Ok...I need someone to come trap this **** fox or kill which ever you would like!!! Lost a hamburg this morning..The fox was walking around on top of the little pen! My hamburg hen freaked out and jumped up and got her head ripped off.
Im so tired of this..

Anyways..who would like lavender Orp chicks? I need to know how many eggs to set! Ill be selling the chicks $7 each I think.

Sorry about your Hamburg hen. Have you found anyone to take out the fox? Predators are the worst.

I may be interested in some Lav Orp chicks. When do you expect them to hatch?

Adorable! How many did you get? Do you know which ones are boys & which are girls? Until about 3 days old, the girls have pinkish bills & the boys have darker bills. Hope you've got lots of girls! Appleyards are pretty ducks also. Have fun!

Sorry Erica. It seems there's always a runt or 2 that fail no matter what we do to try to save it :-( It's part of chicken keeping I suppose. Still hard to get used to, though. Several people expressed an interest in the chicks but they all want hens and I don't know how to accurately sex them. A woman PM'd me in FB last night and told me how by checking their feathers and/or by feeling their pelvic bones. I'll try when I get home tonight but I don't put much faith in those methods. I knew our blue orp. was a roo when he was about 4 weeks old; his legs got VERY thick and his comb and waddles grew more quickly than the black orp's who is a hen. We bought them from a breeder way up in CT who sexed them by putting them on their backs and used the feet up (hen) or feet straight (roo) method. Both raised their feet up but apparently he was wrong. They're beautiful, show quality birds. The roo is especially gorgeous but he's a jerk. We have buffs too but we got them from a guy on Craigslist. Anyway, the chicks are all very pretty colors but I just can't keep all of them. We're getting 2 silkies tonight and I'm waiting on lavender chicks from coupe ~ and ~ DH set 20 more orpington eggs in the incubator Sunday. They will also be for sale (or DH is going to be building another coop very soon)! Are you interested? Or know someone who might be?
