good morning! I'm over in New Windsor area (Rock Tavern). My hubby is building a chicken coop. I can't wait til he's done so we can get the chickens! I'm so excited! We've never had chickens before so this will be quite the adventure and learning experience. I really don't want to get the day olds and deal with the heat lamp etc. Do you think they will still be people friendly if we get then a little bit older? Any other advice for a first time chicken momma?

Like JerseyHen said in one of her replies, even if they haven't been handled much when they're babies, once they know you come in peace with a handful of treats you'll be their favorite person ever. All I have to do is come out of the house and when they see me, they waddle over to see if I have any goodies. It's very adorable!

By any chance, are you picking up 2 splash orpington pullets from someone in New Windsor tomorrow?

Just a few picks of our flock and the new coop/run. We have a 10 x 20 shed. partitioned the back 4 feet. added nest boxes and Driftwood found locally. Exterior elevated run is complete with driftwood perch and a swing! We have ample pine needles so that is what I use in the outdoor pen. We are on a lake and surrounded by critters. We even had a black bear roaming the shoreline winter before last. Very protective so still deciding about making a "playpen" to get them ground level. Ahh forgot about the pair of Bald Eagles nesting near by. nevermind. :D

2 Black Jersey Giants
2 New Hampshires
2 Eastereggers?

Looking for a couple more, and to build a tractor.

Beautiful Barb!!! Love it!

My picture is my girls and we were at South of The Border. We stopped on our way back from Florida, it was so much fun.

Unfortunately there are some people like that out there. We're trying to do a service for people and then people like that come along and screw it up for everyone else. It sure does make you less trusting towards a potential buyer. I would let husband answer next time and hopefully she gets the message. Sometimes it's just kids doing it unless you have actually talked to this person and If that's the case then tell her that something came up and the chickens are no longer available. I wouldn't want to deal with someone like that either.

Thankfully she hasn't bothered me today although I haven't checked my phone since early this morning. It has been a very busy day

Your daughters are adorable. How old are they?

Hey Barnmom!

We are both newbies!  Got our 6 chicks at TSC end of Feb and I have to say raising them from babies was wonderful.  They really are not alot of trouble and you can get them now and still have 6 weeks to bond with them while the coop is being built!  that is what we did. We used a large dog crate that was separated into two halves with the openings together and an old screen door for the top.  when they got bigger, we just wrapped the whole thing with hardware cloth using zip ties and put the screen door on top of that.  Really was easy and we got some gentle critters.I have heard some people do the same thing with a childs swimming pool.
BTW.  I am in Salisbury Mills/Beaver Dam Lake.   hiya neighbor!

Wow you're right around the corner! The coop is almost done. Tomorrow he is going to build the outdoor run part. Does TSC still have chicks?

Not sure.  Agway in Pine Bush might.  I am heading to TSC in Chester today for feed and straw (the girls are starting to blush and I want to get the nest boxes ready).  I will let you know!

TSC only has chicks till the week after Easter. But many smaller/local feed stores carry chicks still. Or your fellow BYC enablers. 2014 New York Chickenstock is next Saturday in Rome, many have pre-sale arrangements with chicks.

I'm going to this if anyone needs a ride or wants to go. Let me know if I can help at all! :)

Hi everyone! I haven't been on here for a while but something happened tonight that has got me really sad. I just got home from work and, like every other night, I checked on my animals. Well, there are no chickens in my coop. There are some white silky feathers near the door but that's all I could see with a flashlight in the dark. I believe all of my chickens have been killed. I'm really hoping that they're somewhere else hiding, but I'm having my doubts. I had 16 chickens.. 1 rooster and 15 hens. They were silkie/golden comet mixes, silkie/white leghorn mixes, a silver laced Wyandotte, a golden laced Wyandotte, a lavander Orpington, some buff orpingtons, 2 white silkies, 2 blue bantam cochins, and an Easter egger . I really hope they're hiding somewhere else! I feel so bad.. I let them out to free range today but I left for work before they went in for the night. I meant to tell my boyfriend to shut them in but I don't know if I did or not. My coop is strong and I've never had issues before, even when the chickens decided to live in my horse barn over the winter when it was cold outside. If the door was shut I think they'd be okay. I shouldn't have let them out today..
