Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

The Sussex show is always fun. It is a decent size show, the sales area is usually decent, there are a few vendors, and it is on the fairgrounds (there are usually other events going on as well). There is a spring and a fall show.

Looking forward to it !

Driving directions say 2 hours 15 minutes. I have a good sense of direction, so I'm feeling good about it.

All of the threads I am on have been slow, I think it is springtime... everyone is outside, unlike in winter where everyone is looking for something to do.

Ya I'm sure your right. It's raining here today:(, this does not make me happy. Here's a little something I thought I would share with you all.

Cool pic, Basskids.

Hope everyone is doing well. Keeping busy now that its spring I'm sure. Today I'm moving the 5 and 6 week old babies from the barn to the chicken coop. They'll be in rabbit hutches. The ducklings have been out in the duckhouse for almost 2 weeks. The 2 week old ducklings in the house will be going out to the barn. And yes, I'm setting more eggs in the incubator. It had a month off, so I think its time to fire it up. I have some Khaki Campbell and KC/Runner cross eggs and more Cream Legbar eggs should be here today. Is anyone else still incubating? We also have 4 broody mixed bantams out in the coop, all sitting on eggs. In fact, I took some eggs away from them as they couldn't cover all of the eggs with their little bodies. If anyone needs mixed hatching eggs to test out their incubator or just for fun, I have a bunch you're welcome to.

It is definitely spring fever! I have been busy getting my gardens in and then hubby landed in the hospital for 9 days. brought him home yesterday.. all is well.

Our little flock is doing great and enjoying their new coop and run. Had it built by a fella in Cornwall that builds coops as a hobby. Great job! I will post a few pictures but someone here mentioned a coop tour which would be awsome! I would love to see others set-ups. how would we get one going? great idea!

I have limited space and recently learned how BIG Jersey Giants can get. So if anyone is interested, I have a 10 week old mating pair pair. I am looking for one or two more hens of a more average size to round out the flock and make an intersesting mix. Allready have 2 new hampshires, and a pair from the pullet bin that look like welsummer cross, or eastereggers. I have no idea how to tell!

So does anyone have suggestions or a couple girls between 10 and 14 weeks old? I love the look of barred rocks and cochins.

Here is my sweetheart, Nugget. She is one of the unknown pullets but is very attached to me as you can see. :D

Cheers! Barb

Sorry to hear about your husband, I hope everything is going well now. Omg, I love jersey giants, that is what my avatar is. Mine are almost 2 yrs old. I have barred rocks and love mine and once had a Cochin but it didn't do well with my bigger birds. They were just to big and my Cochin was sorta of skittish. What color are your pair?':)

GOOD Evening Everybody~

Basskids...CUTE picture and pretty girls! Where was it taken?

Brznwench: I'm glad all is well with your new flock! Please post pictures of your coop. Nugget looks like a sweet EE.

Erica...sooo many chicks and ducklings! I have a bunch in the incubator due Sunday and a broody buff orpington. I have no idea how many she's sitting on. She won't let me peek so I'm leaving her alone.

Lexi...I'm glad you're ok. What's hatching?

JerseyHen...hope all is well with you. How are your garden projects coming along?

Lost a buff orpington the other night. I wasn't feeling well and went to bed early and we all assumed someone else would lock them up. I think the wind shut the coop door before she made it in for the night...a coyote probably. Only a trail of feathers was left. I feel so bad.

I encountered a Craigslist Whacko last night. I decided to list 2/3 of my splash orpington chicks.
10 minutes later my cell phone chimed with a text and this is how it went::

Whacko: Got pullets? I want them.
Me: Yes 2 splash orpington pullets
Whacko: Any more?
Me: I have some eggs hatching Sunday...orpingtons and EEs
Whacko: I have $30. What can I get for $30?
Me: Take the 2 splash and 6 chicks for $30. Call me Sunday so you can pick which ones you want.
Whacko: You pick. Can you deliver them? I can't drive and my b/f works till God knows when.
Me: I'll talk to my husband about delivering them. Do you have other chickens?
Whacko: OK I have $40. What can I get for $40? I have 12 chickens.
Me: Let me see what hatches. Call me Sunday afternoon
Whacko: OK
Me: Goodnight

Early this morning:

Whacko: I have $50. What can I get for $50.

Now I'm thinking this girl might be a little weird....
I was in a conference call and couldn't respond right away.

Whacko: Call me
Me (the dumba$$) called her after my meeting. Her phone was breaking up. I was losing my patience so I told her to call me Sunday and hung up.

5 minutes later:

Whacko: I have $50. What can I get for $50? I want the chicks.
I wasn't near my phone and didn't answer right away so she called...and called...and called...17 times in all. DH wants to answer the phone if she calls again. The wrath of my DH ain't pretty so I texted her and told her other people are interested in the Sunday chicks and I can't promise all of them to her...hoping that puts her off until Sunday.
Engaging in any chicken transactions with this one is probably not a good idea. I don't know if I trust her.

My picture is my girls and we were at South of The Border. We stopped on our way back from Florida, it was so much fun.:) Unfortunately there are some people like that out there. We're trying to do a service for people and then people like that come along and screw it up for everyone else. It sure does make you less trusting towards a potential buyer. I would let husband answer next time and hopefully she gets the message. Sometimes it's just kids doing it unless you have actually talked to this person and If that's the case then tell her that something came up and the chickens are no longer available. I wouldn't want to deal with someone like that either.
