Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

My foo is a welsummer and the girls are garden variety feed store golden reds. They are all very friendly and fun to watch.

I LOVE watching them. My daughter posted a video on Facebook of their first taste of spaghetti. I've watched it at least a dozen times and still LOL every time!
Did you get the girls at Tractor Supply?? We got our "first" 6 from the Highland TSC. We were told they were Rhode Island Reds but now that I know a little more (still pretty clueless though!) I'm thinking they're Red Sex Links. They have a lot of white in them. Our other chickens are from The Natural Pet Center and a "farm" in Connecticut that really should be condemned by the USDA or the Health Department. What a filthy place. At least the chicks were healthy. Anyway...as long as they lay eggs I don't care WHAT they are!

How are your girls doing with this horrible, oppressive heat? Mine seem to more comfy when I let them out to free range. They like to take cover under our Japanese red maple tree. I heard it's going to cool off a little this week, thankfully!!

I went to change the feed and water in the chicks brooder earlyer and found this,
400

400

2 silver spangled hamburg chicks sleeping in the feed dish!!! OMG it was so cute!!!

I wish i got the pic when they where sleeping!! As soon as i opend the door they woke up! Sorry but i just couldnt resist posting them!

How was everyones day?
I tries to introduce the silkie hens to the Wyandotte flock today...didnt go as planed :( but it wasnt horrible...The girls picked on them a bit and would let them eat..so i put them back in my grow out pen...hopefully the girls will except them soon, because i have 5 chicks that need to go in the grow out pen soon!

What a nice, cool night. Windows open... peepers peeping, occasional owl, crickets....perfect sleeping conditions...although, it does seem to be 1:00 am and not feeling so sleepy. I hope your birds settle down to the idea that they're gonna have company, Lexi! Are everyone's chickens going nuts over the cicadas? Mine can't get enough of them. One chick catches one and the rest chase after her trying to take it from her. Gross, yet comical to watch. I guess I would do that in a world where I could only get cannolis every 17 years. Lol
Lisa, what day is good for you to get the eggs? Would you like some Guinea hen eggs as well? I like them, I don't think they taste any different ...they're just smaller, shaped exactly (eggsactly ...d'ohh) like those yummy little chocolate eggs with the candy shell by Cadbury. They are incredibly strong shelled...like a duck egg. They take a couple of whacks until you figure out just how much force you actually need to crack them open. Okay...off to sleep, I hope!

For a Monday, it wasn't so bad. I hope your day was calm and uneventful~ !
How long does it take for everyone to cohabitate in peace? We have those 2 Orpingtons who spend most of their time avoiding the rest of the girls who actually stop what they're doing to make sure the orps know they're not welcome. They (the big girls) don't peck at them but they do chase them away. They've all been together for at least 2 months now. I feel so bad for the Orps!! What do you use for a grow out pen?

I haven't seen many cicadas at all....just a few dead in the grass here and there. Not the prettiest creatures! Am I escaping the worst or is there still time to be invaded?
Are you heading towards New Windsor this week? I work 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM but ANY time or place that's convenient for you will work for me. I SO appreciate this! These girls of mine better start earning their keep soon!!

OH..sent this before I answered you about the other types of eggs! Duh!
If you have Guinea hen/duck eggs that you can spare, I'll try a few! How much $$? I'll make sure I haven't given one of my kids all my cash!
