Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Good to hear the Oprs are not getting picked on!!
As for the crossed beak, you can try clipping or filing it down..do a search on BYC for crossed beak ..i had a rooster back in the day with a crossed beak..i had to take nail clippers and clil it back a bit so he could eat.

Evening all, I was just checking in over on the NY thread and earlier and have been reading up all over here on Marans.

One of my staff at work had his chicken coop torn apart last night by a black bear - ugh, my worst fear when I finally get my own chickens. Luckily his 5 hens were fine and the bear was just after the feeder, but did a lot of damage. He has to do a lot of repairs on his coop and rebuild his run. He is also taking in the feeder every night from now on, into his house/garage, no more leaving it in the coop at night, at least until December when the bears are asleep. I guess I should plan on the same when the time comes.

Have good evening and enjoy the clear skies tonight an tomorrow, I'll be house-painting.

I know, I warned him about that, he's thinking about putting up electric poultry netting, I'm not familiar exactly with that, I've seen Electronetting before, my sister uses that to move her pigs around pasture, but that looks kind of big and heavy. I'll have to read up on the type used for poultry.

Thanks Lexi...!
I searched BYC but I'm not exactly sure WHAT to clip/file? The side of the beak I would assume, right....? I'm going to try searching YouTube. I'm one of those peeps who needs a visual explanation. I really don't want to hurt her.

A beautiful day~ hope you had a good one!

Terry, the electric fencing im talking about is the kind people use for cattle or horses..its just 2 wires all the way around the area you want to keep the beats away from
electric poultry netting will keep out foxes, raccoons, skunks and maybe coyote..but i dont think a bear.

Thanks Lexi...!

I trimmed the front part on both upper and lower beak...can you post a pic of your hens beak?
I need a visual explination as well when it comes to things like that! i read so many pages over and over on how to trim goat hooves lol i just couldnt get it...watched a video once on youtube and now im like a pro lmao!
But just make sure you dont trim/file to far back. You dont want to make your girl bleed

Just stoppin in to say HAPPY FATHERS DAY..i know most of us on this thread are cool chicks..but still, happy fathers day!! Lol

DARN! I didn't get a chance to log into BYC yesterday...I definitely would have posted pictures to get your advice. We had no idea what we were doing! DH did it and I ummm...supervised. (I didn't want her to get mad at me LOL) If I can get a picture of her with her new "beak cut" this afternoon, I'll post it to see if you think we should trim it more and/or also trim the bottom. He used a nail clipper and cut just a tiny bit off the tip of her top beak which helped A LOT. I put a bowl of treats which consisted of chicken baby food, yogurt, sunflower seeds and leftover pancakes from breakfast in front of her and she ate the entire bowl. The poor thing must have been starving!

Happy Monday?
Somebody just informed me it's supposed to rain again...? Say it ain't so!!!!!!

Yesterday I was in the kitchen cooking for our BBQ and DH was reading on the patio. I saw him get up quickly and wave something off w/the newspaper so I went outside to see what was up. He said a hawk was flying just above the roofline of our house directly over where the girls were foraging. YIKES!
