Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

I'm afraid to put a heat lamp in the coops, too....for fire/safety reasons as well as compromising the chickens' cold hardiness. DH never had a chance to run electricity out there so it looks like we'll be switching out waterers every morning which will be a PITA because I work 5:30 AM - 2:30 PM and there's just enough time to do what I have to do to get out of the house on time. I suppose I can set the alarm for 4:15 instead of 4:30 (ugh!!!). My husband takes our son to daycare at 6:30 on his way to work so he's always pressed for time too. He's been cool enough to lug the 5 gal. waterer up the hill to the Nuggets' coop for me. It's dark up there and I'm afraid of critters lol. Even with the frozen water issues, I don't regret getting chickens so they must be worth the trouble !

What's everybody doing for Thanksgiving? I'm cooking. There will be 9 of us.

My birds got a little frost bite Sunday with that wicked cold. They were not smart enough to stay in the coop. Today of course no one would trespass the line of snow. Go figure.

Can you bring in the waterers at night, then bring the back out in the AM? I am going to be switching all of the water bowls to the poultry waterers. I already have one, and bring it in at night so it dosnt freeze. I think we all need to invest in thoes heated hoses lol
I will be at my boyfriends mothers for the earlyer part of the day, then ill be heading to my fathers around 4. So ill be out and about! Cant wait for left overs lmao!!!

My chickens were out and about on the cold days, but today they didnt leave the coop because of the snow lol . I saw one of the ducks taking a bath today...I dont know how they dont freeze into duck pops!

I can bring the waterers in at night but don't the chickens need water available constantly or do they not drink at night?? I would LOVE to just bring them in in the evening and run them back out in the AM..,that would save a lot of time and aggravation.

Sounds like a nice Thanksgiving

I know what you mean about leftovers. Cooking and tasting as I'm preparing T-giving dinner, the wine, appetizers, etc., always screws up my appetite so by the time we sit down to eat, I'm never hungry! I'll be enjoying everything Friday lol
Do you shop on Black Friday? I try not to leave the house~ No patience for crowds so I usually get all the Christmas decorating done.

Happy Thanksgiving if I don't see ya here :)

Chickens roost all night, so they will be fine without water over night. Plus you get up pretty early, so they will have their water back before most of them are up and about anyways!
I try not to shop on black friday..im not big on shopping and buy most of the presents online lol my boyfriends mother on the other had, is out shopping at like 5 in the morning lmao..no way youll catch me doing that!

OH your BF's mom is brave. We went to Walmart on Thanksgiving night a couple of years ago. DH dragged me. I went in my pajamas (I fit right in). It wasn't too bad at all but after a couple of hours of waiting in line for a TV and Xbox was enough for me. I was getting bored and tired. Nobody needs/wants anything that requires a Black Friday madness trip this year so I'll probably be shopping online for the most part. A trip to Toys R Us for The Boy and we'll be in good shape. I can't stand crowds. Sometimes I can't even get through the grocery store without getting shopping cart rage! I have NO patience

Anyway...I think I'm going to do what you suggested and just bring the waterers in for the night. Thanks Lexi !! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
