Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Hi Everybody~ Still getting 8-10 eggs from 11 chickens although Lucy (or is it Ethel?...can't tell them apart) hasn't laid in several days so maybe she's quitting for the winter months? I have not used any supplemental light. A few of them recently started staying outside the coop door (but inside the run) when they go in to roost at night. They've never done this before. Do they like the cold? Are they afraid of the dark coop? Strange girls...no surprise given their keeper :he Lexi~ I wish you had your camera yesterday! I've yet to see my girls' reaction to snow/ice. We only got a dusting today and by the time I got home from work to let them out yesterday, the ice was pretty much gone. Murphy (the puppy) harassed the Nuggets today. Mr. Blue the Roo got his feathers in a twist and went after him. I wish I'd taken a video. Only caught Murph going after this nugget. She was NOT amused. Gotta go to bed. I can't believe I'm still awake! Hope everyone is well !
I cant believe your getting that many eggs still! You must be feeding some awesome stuff!! Lol My oldest dog likes to run into the middle of the flock and scare the heck out of the chickens..its pretty neat to see how fast the chickens react! Your coop is beautiful!!! You really did a great job on it!

Thanks Lexi :) Every year I promise myself I'm going to scale down on Christmas decorating because it's a giant PITA to take down but I couldn't resist decorating the coop and it looked so Christmas-ey with that light dusting of snow everywhere. I just HAD to take a picture lol. My mini Schnauzer leaves the chickens alone for the most part but every once in awhile he'll harass them just because he can. He's a bad azz like that. Murphy on the other hand seems hell bent on terrorizing them just for ha-ha's but Mr. Blue made his presence known yesterday and chased him away. Knowing Murph, it didn't phase him! Anywho, the Girls get their regular DuMor feed and scraps. When I get home from work I throw a few handfuls of corn scratch and sunflower seeds all over the run for them. I'm waiting for them to slow down soon though. That one Leghorn who was sick a few months ago is looking really ragged again...almost as if she went through a bad molt but the others aren't molting so something is definitely going on with her. She hasn't laid an egg~ ever. The other Leghorn was laying regularly but hasn't laid in a few weeks. I thought Leghorns are supposed to be great layers....? I'm not impressed with them. The black orpington finally started laying. We got her as a chick in late April. The other Nuggets (buff orps and EE's) we got in July (from Craiglist - Chicken Louie ) aren't laying yet. Do you think they'll start laying soon or will they wait until Spring?? It seems to me they should have started laying already.... What's new in your flock? How are the babies??

Im pretty sure your late bloomers will start laying in the spring. My Orpintons havnt laid yet either. As for your leghorns...they have been bred to pump eggs out none stop, but they should slow down during winter. and they are not really winter hardy birds, so i can understand why she stopped laying. I use to have white leghorns and EE mixes, but sold them all for more hardy birds. You should get a muscovy and let Murphy try terrorizing it! Only one getting scared will be Murphy! My ducks dont take crap from the dogs lmao

LOL! I would LOVE to watch Murphy get his butt kicked by a Muscovy!!! As a matter of fact, Tucker too. Even our vet calls Tucker "the bad boy". He's a great dog, but he's a punk! Between the cold weather, the snow and ice and the school delays and cancellations and half-days I am SO OVER this week !!!!!!

I know what you mean! I read everything too including "Chickens for Dummies" but I still feel really clueless. There's a lot to learn. Hopefully with a little more experience we'll be comfy . Thank goodness for BYC !

I dont understand how ducks dont freeze to death!! Or atleast how they dont turn into duckpops! I was breaking up ice in the water bowl this morrning in the chicken pen, left the pen door open so the girls could walk around the yard...left for about 30 mins, came home and 2 of the younger muscovies were splashing around in the chickens water bowl!

LOL @ DuckPops!!! Maybe they joined that club where all the crazy old men go swimming in the dead of winter (The Polar Bear Club)? That's all I got....Hey it's Friday and I'm DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

Chickens will eat nails if you let them!
Everyone please check your chickens for frostbite for the couple of days! One of my poor little muscovies feet were froozen solid this morning! I have hay down everywhere, which I thought would prevent this. And I lost the muscovie with the bad leg last night..but I dont think it was from the cold...she felt very underweight and boney...so I believe somthing else was going on with her!
Just please take some time to check out each chicken and inspect waddles/combs and feet!
