Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

I live in Rockland county, I am getting a coop soon and I was wondering if you knew where I could find hens, maybe Cochins?
Thank you. I was trying to post to the group but I'm having some trouble.

If you want a rooster please let me know. I have to many, just hatch chicks this April. Only 5 hatched and got 4 roosters out it.

That's alotta roosters! I gave Mr. Blue the Roo to Serenity Lane a few weeks ago because I didn't want a rooster anymore (he was the only rooster) and now that the 7 babies (hatched in early June) are getting bigger, it looks like I have 2...a lavender orpington and a splash. Not sure what I want to do. If they're mean they have to go!

I am all chicked out.... phew. I think we have the last 3 broodies about to hatch out what is left of the set eggs. You know you have set too many eggs when you can't even remember how many you started with, how many chicks hatched, and how many you have left to go. I think we set about 200 eggs this season so far between the incubator and broodies! Yikes. I have chicks of 3 different ages growing out (10 12 week old bantams, 10 4 week old bantams, 5 2 week old naked necks, and 10 "coupla day" old BYM out with the broodies). Remind me next spring NOT to do a staggered hatch again. Running 2 brooders and a grow out pen is confusing. Before you label me a chicken hoarder, we only set this many to provide for a friend that wants about 100 chicks, but we could only give them about 25 - 30 at a time with our set up and we were also in the process of hatching game bantams for ourselves and procuring eggs put us into a staggered hatch. I think everyone will be out in the coops by the end of the month.

I managed to get the broodies that are out and about with their little ones to accept several of the 2 week olds! I have some spectacular broody mommas. One is so clumsy though. She is constantly suffocating chicks, but she is so desperate to be the momma hen, what am I do do??? I tried to break her, I tried to separate her from the chicks, but she just freaks out and I am afraid she will kill herself trying to get back with them. So, I am letting nature take its course.

Here are the naked necks:

Check with County Boy, he has some beautiful Cochins. He chats with us on the NY Chicken Lover thread, but believe he is in Eastern NY.

Hi Lisa, yes way to many roosters for me. I have one real mean one that has to go. He is always trying to get me and my husband but leaves the kids alone. As soon as my husband is better, he is going to take care of him. I actually have to hit him with a shovel or stick it becomes near me. If you know anybody that need one let me know. I have 7 for now, three adults and four chicks. They will be dinner if I can't find homes for them. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep any of them yet.
