My 2 year old laying hen usually lays a huge egg everyday-for about 3 weeks they would get stuck for a couple of days and then she would just pop out a huge one on the ground-not in her usual laying box. She was clearly distressed with her vent opening and closing all the time, back end was very messy and I thought she was on her way out, after checking her closely I saw she had a slight prolapse. Since then she has recovered and back to her normal self. She is moulting now and off the lay so obviously she is having no problems since she is not making eggs. My question is: Is there anything I can give her so when she starts to make eggs again they wont be so big or can I just stop her making eggs, she is gorgeous and I dont mind keeping her as a non producing pet.

Anyway advise would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Thanks A.T.Hagan

I feed the Barastoc Golden Yolk Layer Pellets with 15% protein. Maybe I should limit their feed? I always have the feeder full of food would it be better to just feed them once a day?

At 15% I would not limit her feed as that is not the problem I believe. She's two years old so it's normal for egg size to increase. If she was at the end of her lay cycle things can get out of whack for a while and sometimes at the beginning. Were any of these huge eggs double/triple yolkers? Those can happen occasionally particularly when a lay cycle is beginning or ending. They usually correct themselves.

As she doesn't seem to be getting too much protein I don't think there's much you can do about it but wait and see what's going to happen.

Okay thanks, yes and she has laid quite a few double yolkers!
Hopefully things will right themselves for the future.
Thankyou info
