Huge Rattlesnake!!!!

17HMR if in the country were people dont care about gun shots. very acurate and if you get good with it you can hit stuff at 200+ yards.

.22 rifle if you want to be a little quiter. Ammo is cheeper but gun in not as acurate as 17HMR

Break action air rifle if you need to be very quite. the new ones are as powerful as a .22 up to 30-35 yards. I have a Gammo Big Cat. Also good for killing racoons in live traps when you dont want to wake the neighbors at 5:00am + lead pellets are cheep.

Put a feeder out with peanuts and they will no care about your chicken food. Give a few days at the feeder to feel safe and then sit back and start filling the freezer.

or snacks for the dogs.

I'm so glad I dont have to deal with snakes in michigan. All these snake stories give me the hibbie gibbies.

Hi guys,
Sorry I haven't been on here since I started this thread - been workin' too much!!

Tonopah, love the pics! I'll have to see if I can get the ones my daughter took on her phone into my computer, then I'll post! Gotta love those rattlers!!

Rufus, thanks for the tips and info. I will be dousing my squirrel holes with gasoline this weekend and see what comes out! Ready. . .aim. . .

Bear Foot Farm - So, rattles don't tell age, huh? Interesting. . . I've dealt with these things all my life and never bothered to study about them. Guess I should do some reading and get my facts straight! I'll go check out that site you included in your post. Thanks!!!

Patman - I love your idea of enticing the squirrels out with food, then shooting them!!! We live way out in the country, so we're free to shoot at will. Why didn't I think of that!!!!

ksct - You know, I actually love snakes, but I can't stand rattlers! I've had pet snakes, and handled many huge boas, etc and I find them fascinating. We have other types of snakes in our area, and they are quite beneficial to have around. Rattle snakes, however, give me the creeps and I don't want them anywhere near my property! YUK!!!

it really depends on which came first, the chicken or the snake?
how do we know that chicken doesnt taste like rattlesnake?

beefy, good point ! when I get the chance to test it myself, I'll post it on BYC... although I can't think of a good instance in which I will get fresh rattler. It'll make for a good story, that's for sure.
And I'll have to include photos...

Please let there be no rattlers around my yard.

My x and I used to hunt Rattle snakes to make hat bands and belts. I always cooked the meat. To me it taste more like shrimp than chicken. any rest. that I have ever eaten it at always deep fry's it and you really don't know what you are eating. I did a stir fry with the meat. It is great cooked in white wine. The worst part about it, is it takes lots of time to pick the meat off the bone, well worth the effort. I had it with veggies on rice. you can also use it in soups and stews. Snake tacos are yummy! Pretty much in shrimp or crab recipes.

You make it sound really yummy, but there is that creepy factor. Maybe if someone else picked it off the bones for me . . .

I'm sure this big boy has been eaten. My daughter's friend took him home to skin him and I know her family eats rattle snake. He was so fat you could probably get steaks off of him!!!

When I went out to check on my chicks this evening, I found 1 missing again! Apparently there are more snakes living in these squirrel holes. Tomorrow after work my husband and I are going to do the gasoline thing and try to get rid of them. Wish me luck!!!
