Huge sores on duck's back and wing.

Sting or ant bites could very well trigger her to "attack" herself. Benadryl might be a good solution. However, I would hesitate to give it to her orally. They do make a Benadryl cream/lotion in a tube that you might try just a very thin layer of after you rinse of the antibiotic. Benadryl is given to animals based on their weight orally. We use it with several of our dogs at one pill per 30 pounds of body weight. So dosing a bird becomes more complicated.

I think I will try some benadryl ointment just in case. Do I need to do anything with the broken feathers or will they heal up on their own?

So far the neosporin seems to have helped at least a little bit. The sores are more pink now rather than the angry red and she is sleeping comfortably and not twitching her wings like she was earlier. =)

Thanks again for all the advice!

I am dealing with a wounded duck as well. It seems everyone has most of what I could say covered. Keep it clean and keep her inside. I am using vetricyn on my ducks wounds and adding nutridrench to the water daily.
Without knowing what happened exactly its hard to know how to deal with it. Were there a lot of feathers in the pond? What time of day was it exactly? Predators can be everywhere even in the city. I am also no expert and just spit balling ideas for the masses to run with. Best to keep her isolated for now and keep a good eye on her to see if there are new habits or some other symptom develops. Keep us posted.

You say you have chickens? are they in with the ducks? this really looks like something chickens would do, if they see any red they will come in like vultures and literally eat what ever it is. Do not let her near them until completely healed. Blue Kote will disguise wounds too.
Bless her heart I'm sure she is in pain.

It was late afternoon yesterday. There were a few feathers in the pond but she was already missing quite a few from the aggressive drake a couple weeks ago. New feathers had started growing in. I was home all day and going in and out of the house. This happened within an hour while I was in the house. The back door was open and I was close enough to hear if anything would have got in the yard and upset the ducks.

I do have chickens but they are not kept with the ducks.

More questions: she is picking at the sores quite a bit, should I bandage or cover them at all or is it best to leave them open?

Is there anything else I can/ should do for the discomfort?

It probably is bothering her can you make up a saline rinse for her using warm water and some salt mix it together real well and pour over this area. It does help with healing too.
Do you have any Blue Kote? if you don't and get some get the one with the dauber the spray will get on everything but this will disguise the wound and my help get her mind off of it. Plus it really helps with healing to with out keeping the wound wet. Possible the other ducks may have chewed on her but I don't see this with water fowl like with chickens. What about your pond anything in it that may have chewed on her?

We don't keep anything else in the pond. All it is is a 60 gallon galvanized horse trough and I change the water every other day. I had just changed the water a couple hours before I spotted the sores.

I will try the saline rinse and check around for the blue kote.

Thanks!
