My 2-year old Red Star hen just laid a HUGE squishy soft-shelled egg. We have a coop and an outdoor pen, and at night they all head into their coop, but the red star was out their in the corner. She seemed scared and in pain, so I brought her inside to the nesting boxes. She immediately laid a huge egg, that was soft-shelled. She wouldn't eat the next day.
When the egg was smashed into the sink, the yolk was a tan colored egg-shaped thing, with the same texture as a hard boiled egg. !! Help?! She's still acting sick!
Ate before the egg: Sugary cake remains, feed (No previous problems), and dried mealworms.
The sugary cake may be the problem, but all the other hens were fine. and the hen who laid the egg tends to not to eat the food scraps.
I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks!
