huge wound on hen...she may be about to die...help please..ASAP!

THere have been several people here who, in attempting to use tea tree oik for one thing or another, saw immediate toxic effects in their birds and IMEMDIATELY washed the tea tree oil off. I have also heard this from a couple of breeders. Beware.

Thanks so much for all of the replies! The hen is reovering like a miracle. The wound has dried up, it is very clean and she is WALKING now!!!!!! Now every day I am letting her outside in a closed in area, and she is loving it. She is taking dust baths, she is even scratching in the ground with BOTH feet!!! Im so proud of her and thanks guys for helping. We are going to build her a brand new fancy coop for just her and her new buddy to live in once they get feeling better.

I'm sorrry to hear about your hen. I have had a few hens get wounds from my Delaware rooster Jack. His spurs are pretty long and hurt (beleive me they do he has attacked me several times and have scars to prove it) Anyway I had one BR hen that the spur cut the skin away from the body under her wing. I never thought it would heal but I used saline and rinsed it off and then applied Betadine and isolated her and put antibiotic in her water for a week. It looked worse before it got better. I never thought it would heal but it has and she has grown feathers back as well. And she isn't the only girl that I have had to isolate and I do the same thing for each of them. Saline, Betadine and then the anitbiotic in the water. Also isolation. The trick is to keep it clean and keep her away from everybody in her own cage.

I hope your hen gets better.

Do you have a rooster? He could be the cause of her wound, maybe?
