I just had my first actual injury in one of my roos. He got scaled by another one. I researched what I should do on here, but everything says to use poultry specific stuff. However, as I read other threads I’m noticing people saying to use human meds, such as neosporin, etc.
Human meds are much cheaper and multipurpose, but poultry specific stuff is what I automatically reach for. I just bought rooster booster wound spray for $18 and it seems I could have just used regular antiseptic wash?
So, my question is this: how should I stock my poultry (chicken and quail) medicine cabinet?
I want to care for my birds as well as possible, but not go broke buying stuff I don’t need or if a cheaper, just as good option, is available.

I use Blu-Kote for scalp wounds because the other birds tend to peck at red. For the first wash, I use a standard antiseptic wash. I'm looking at a bottle of Band-aid hurt-free antiseptic wash right now that I use on my birds. It depends on the injury and treatment. For anything internal, I would use poultry specific medicines or consult a veterinarian. For washing wounds, I don't think it makes that much difference.

You can substitute a lot of human stuff like neosporin (as long as it is plain—-without pain relief) or use poultry specific such as blu-kote....personal preference antiseptic wash is basically same across board....good idea to have peroxide, iodine etc on hand but my favorite is chlorohexidine whether in soap or rinse form. I think there are a few “fish” substitutes that are acceptable when stocking supply cabinet but @casportpony or others would be way better at reviewing those......and then with some injuries like what you’ve described I have done isolation without treatment with good healing success 😉😉😉

I saw the blu-kote stuff, but a lt of people don’t like it very much. He’s by himself right now.
Yes, internal vs. external issues makes a lot of sense. Hopefully, I won’t have internal issues. Except an egg bound hen, but that was lube and prep. h + calcium. Lol! In the only store open when I went to buy these things, the lube was locked up. I told the guy what it was for, saying since he had to get it for us
I might as well tell him what I want it for. That way I wasn’t the only one embarrassed! Lol!

Have personally used neosporin on a king quail because this site suggested it like u said and it worked perfect no infection and no problems. Also Nabiki knows her stuff so id go with what she says

Oh yes, she definitely appears to. Anytime someone has a quail question I see her tagged on it. Heck, I’ve done it myself :gig
Don’t take the words “appears to” the wrong way. That’s jst the way I talk. I never assume someone knows everything and I refuse to put 100% of my trust in most people, mainly because then if it doesn’t work I won’t be mad and blame them.
To clarify, I don’t wish to get mad at anyone if their advice happens to not work. It’s not fair to them because they’re relying on me to provide details and aren’t here to experience the situation themselves, therefor not being able to pick up on details I may have missed mentioning due to inexperience.
Man, I really hope this is coming across the way I’m intending it to! :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Please, don't put 100% faith in me, because I'm not an expert, and there are times when I'm not right.
