Humanity Disgusts Me

There is so much good about humanity, that it seems like an incredibly broad sentiment to title your post "humanity disgusts me". As part of humanity, perhaps you could start a grassroots movement to change these practices.

It hurts me too, to see this happen. We could sit around and be disgusted or we could turn our anger into action. That's what I try to do, being involved with certain reputable animal organizations, writing letters to congress, volunteering, etc.

I think feeding the hungry would be an excellent alternative. Maybe you could contact some animal organizations and see if you can get involved somehow. Maybe we could come up with some different suggestions here...

Our Walmart I work at actually does donate the meat and deli meat that has expired
or is about to to the Animal Sanctuary to feed the bears and big cats.

i wonder if the hatcheries could kill the chicks and donate them to preserves and sanctuaries to feed carnivorous animals?

I don't see why they don't do this. When I had snakes it was much easier to get them to eat thawed out chicks than thawed out frozen mice. The mice were much more convenient for me to get though. And couldn't they be used at zoos too? At least to supplement the carnivores diet? Seems stupid to me to put them in the trash, if nothing else compost them so they are gping somewhere besides a landfill.

There is a guy that will buy cockerals and freeze them and he does sell them to reptile owners, pet shops and a fellow that has a reptile show business.

Don't forget some animal organizations feel owning chickens that lay eggs is forced labor, you would have to be cautious about who you contact but there should be something out there.

Yes, I'm not referring to "extremist" animal rights groups, but there are many farm oriented ones that are out there who support owning and raising chickens. Or perhaps even a human charity organization, if approaching this from a 'food for the poor (people)' approach.

Now, on to your premise....If you want chicken to cost $10 per lb., let the government take responsibility for raising it.

It's because of government that these poor little roosters get ground up. City governments establish land use zoning and farm animals are not allowed in residential areas.

If you could caponize all those roosters, there'd be hoards of animal rights activists protesting in the streets, once they found out what's involved. It only takes reading a few caponizing threads on this site, to realize that.

So, what ya gonna do?

The problem as I see it is that most breeds of chicken don't have that much meat on them. They still eat a lot of food, so it's a cost thing. Even if you can get them for free, it cost more to raise them than they are worth.
