humidity question

Since i've never heard this mentioned I'm guessing there's a reason its not a good idea? school me!

When I bought my hygrometer I calibrated it by putting it in a tupperware with a cup of wet salt. And this somehow magically creates 75% humidity. So... wouldn't that be an easy way to create 75% humidity for lock down?

75% is WAYYYYYY too high. I aim for 55-65... Basically 60...

Welcome to BackYardChickens lilstar!

For the first 18 days of incubation, humidity should be around 40-50%
Then for lockdown, raise it to 55-60%

Some have better luck with

higher humidity, and others with lower.
Like others have said, 75% is just to high

i went into lockdown today and my humidity was 60 now its 50 ........... i was told 80% too Lil till i talked to debi we all fondly refer to her as (Craptastic) her name here is Debiraymond... she totally knows her stuff!!!! i ask her all of my questions and concerns!!! I think we should clone her!!! Just added some water am almost back to 60% She totally rocks chicken xp!!!! Welcome to BYC!!!!!

If I haven't sent you my article on incubation from Practical Poutlry magazine pm my your e-mail address and I'll send it to you. It helped me and it may help you.

In a nutshell on humidity.. 35% til day 16 , then 55% til day 19, then 65% til the end.


Now keep in mind that it may be hard to keep it steady but lower is better than higher. As for temp I say 100* -101* is good. I was recently at a seminar in Oneida and they "expert" there said the same thing. So if it's above 99.5 but not more than 101.0 go with that.

By all means follow the directions for your particular model if they say different.

OK, I'm totally confused.
I used the info from the backyard chickens "How to" page:

It states:
"You want 50% humidity for day 1-18, then 70-80% for the last few days."

I've had it at about 70-72%. I'm expecting them to start pipping tomorrow. Although I noticed a few wobbly eggs this afternoon (or I could be dreaming lol)
