Humidity Question

There is always a chance. Its good you plan on leaving them for a day or two more. You don't say if they are all from the same breed or are they an assortment of different breeds. If they are different breeds, there is a chance that it will take a little while longer for the others to hatch. Did you candle them at lockdown?

Hi Bill,

Last night when I went to bed, there were eight chicks. When I woke up this morning, there were 9. Don't know where that one slipped by me! LOL. It looks like the grand total for this hatch will be nine! These eggs are all from the same breed. They are Silver Birchen Marans. I contacted the seller and told him about the hatch. He said he normally has a lot of luck hatching his own eggs, but he has terrible luck with shipped eggs. Is this typical? I will try to get some pictures posted tonight!

I have not attempted to candle eggs before. I am going to do some reading on this and try to learn how. Is it difficult to candle eggs which are dark such as Maran eggs?

I'd pump up the humity cuz it's better not to let the memberane dry out and I think a bit more humidity won't kill it my incubator doesn't even have a humidity control it just keeps making it humid and more humid

Yes, typically it's very difficult to candle Marans' eggs & it's because of the dark color, didn't know that's what they were when I ask if you candled.
It's also somewhat difficult to hatch shipped eggs. It depends a lot on how far they traveled & how they were handled & various other factors. Because of the risk involved, I will never order eggs if the shipper is more than 1 state away from my location.

Here are the little ones! They are all doing very well. I was a little concerned about the smallest bird who appears to be the youngest, but it has perked up and doing nicely.

These eggs came from Indiana and I am located in Ohio. I almost drove out to pick them up when I ordered them, but it was a bit of a hike. I will definitely keep that in mind in the future if I purchase shipped eggs again.

I appreciate all of the info, Bill, and it was nice talking to you! I will keep taking pictures of these chicks as they grow. Best of luck with your birds!

FARMER JESSIE --- GREAT LOOKING BUNCH OF CHICKS. !!!!!!. I see different colors in there. Make sure all are eating & drinking, but your on your way to some fun & interesting times.

CHCIKYDEE - If you see this I'm curious. BYW, I'm in Cottage Grove. But, I've hatched quite a number of different breeds of chickens, most Bantam, but they all have hatched in 21 days. Why do Marans seem to take longer?

Howdy Bill!

Well, the chicks will be a week old tomorrow and all are doing well! I am excited to have some full grown Marans running around in a few months! I checked the last four eggs and they were all empty. The guy I traded with for my Copper Black Marans stopped by today and he was quite impressed with the hatch. He was trying to talk me into incubating some eggs from my Black Giant rooster and Columbian hens. I had originally planned on doing that, but goodness I have a lot of birds right now! I am excited to start a new batch!

It has been great chatting with you, Bill! I will post more pictures as these chicks grow. I imagine there is a "brag" forum on this site?

FARMER JESSIE --- I'm afraid you already have the dreaded hatching disease, I doubt you will able to resist hatching more this year
