humidity question

heres the thing I did a dry incubation. the humidity where i live has been oddly high. inside my house has been running 50+ is there anyway to lower the humidity in bator without having to deal with lowering it in the whole house too? thanks for the link ill check it out!

Do you have a dehumidifier? Maybe you could place the bator in a room with the dehumidifier. If you were able to shut the door you could just have it control that room a little better. Obviously you would have to find something for it do drain in to. Not sure if that would work but just a thought.

At AmyLynn... with my current batch (due to hatch on Mother's Day... hoping that is a good luck sign!!!) I am trying to do the dry method because I only had a 30% hatch last month and I was not watching humidity but think that was my problem. Anyway... right now my bator with no water was running 23%-25%. So I have been adding a very small amount of water daily (via a tube and syringe) to keep humidity at 29%-34%. I did read the article that you sent to me... Since I am still VERY new to this and you seem to be the one that everyone refers to on this method I just want to make sure that this is where I should keep it?

I am using a new Hova Bator 1588 digital... So far looks like everything is running perfect. It is preset to run at 100.0 so it has been ranging 99.7-100.3. I do have an internal thermometer which confirms that this is right. I do not have another hygrometer at this point so I am going by the one on the unit (I had more eggs that my bator could hold so I have 8 eggs running in a second bator that my friend let me borrow and running completely dry they were both measuring the exact same so I am "assuming" that they are relatively accurrate....). A hygrometer will be my next purchase (if anyone has a suggestion on which one to buy that would be great).

Let me know if you guys can think of anything else that I need to be doing. I will candle on day 7 this weekend. I am a little nervous since I am attempting with so many eggs... 48... Ugh! Could be very good, or very bad....St. Francis wave you hand in my direction. :)

You can try either a little container of rice or unpopped popcorn in the bator. Both of those things are supposed to absorb moisture and lower humidity. The other thing is those silicone packets you find in medicians and new clothes. They also absorb moisture and have been used.

29-34% is perfect in my opinion. As long as you monitor the air cells and check them against the charts, even if your hygrometer is off, you'll know wether the levels that you are running are adequate. This last hatch my humidity was too low completetly dry as well, so I used a damp sponge in the bator and it kept it right at that 30% level that I like. Good luck! I hope you see lots of babies on Mother's day!

Thanks! I will play with it while I wait for eggs:) and try the rice! Kuchchick I bought a dail type hydrometer from a cigar store on line and love it. it's small and only takes up one egg slot in my turner. I spent the extra 5$ for the kit to make sure it was accurate then compared it to my home weather system by accurate. it is very accurate and didn't cost me but like 10$ from the cigar place.:)

if your interested the website is cheaphumidors.com they have an aray to choose from. I got a 1 HYG-75 Brass Analog Hygrometer with Glass Face $9.97 and then the kit which was a little extra but I didn't think it was a bad price
