I finished the 1st book last night and my kids are going to read it before we go see the movie this weekend. I just want to ask, though, how violent are we talking when it comes to some of the scenes? I know there will be some turn your head scenes, but are they too graphic?

I honestly didn't think they were bad. They use so much camera jitter to obscure what's going on that it's pretty hard to tell what you are seeing. That's how they managed the PG-13 - shake the camera around on anything that could be gory. The theatre I was in was full of kids and parents and no one seemed too horrified (I'm thinking everyone had read the book ).

I watched it a few days ago, and I think they did a pretty good job. They did leave out a few things...but I think overall they didn't change too much. And the changed they made I thought were pretty good. The characters all fit what I though they would look like. And it wasn't too gory, either.

I agree with featherz. The most gory parts would be when Rue pulls the spear out (which they hardly show anyways) and when Cato breaks a boys neck (which again, is blurry). All of the other scenes are shown though Katniss's hallucinogenic state (when everything is blurry) and when there is action where the camera shakes.

My son has read the entire series, numerous times. I bought advance tickets to the midnight premier and hubby took him ( Midnight! Like I was going to take him!

) The books mean so much to him that I thought this would be a fun memory.

My son loved the movie. He didn't complain about anything as he realizes the time constrictions on turning any book into a movie.

Before he went, I read the first book. I wanted to know what to expect. He has said from the start that his 8 year old sister is too young for it, but my husband reported seeing kids that age there...
at MIDNIGHT! I wouldn't want younger kids seeing or reading it.
