Hungry but not eating?

Just thought I'd pop back on here with another update. After a few days where things seemed touch-and-go, I think Red has turned the corner. For a couple of days, she really just wouldn't eat, and was going to bed with an empty crop. I was finally able to bribe her to eat with tomatoes and hot dog buns soaked in electrolyte water & probiotics- she became VERY enthusiastic about eating both of those things, which then led to her eating pellets again. Today was the first day that she was back to her bossy, hungry self. She was walking around like a normal chicken, eating all that she could find and insisting everyone else treat her like the head hen that she is. I'm so relieved- all of my girls are pets, but Red is special.

BUT

My Golden Comet is now about 2 days into acting exactly like Red was. Poking around at food but barely eating, slimy milky poop, hunched up looking uncomfortable, but then running off when you approach her like nothing's wrong. I'm obviously watching her very closely, but since this is almost exactly the same as what Red just went through, I'll just continue to try to interest her in whatever food she'll eat and hope she rides it out in a week or so.

A few of the others are also having slightly slimy poop, though none of the rest are off their food or looking so miserable.

The whole group will get their second round of dewormer next weekend. I haven't seen any worms/eggs expelled, so not sure what's going inside their little digestive systems, but something's clearly running through them. The next week is supposed to be a lot warmer, generally up above freezing, so I'm hoping that will help too.

@TwoCrows Hello! I know this thread is old but I’ve got a similar issue with my bantam and a quick question.

I’ve started giving the mixture you recommended (ginger pepper etc.) She’s only taking very little at a time. Should I ONLY be giving this until I get it all down her or see improvement?Or should I continue also giving pedialyte since she’s definitely dehydrated. (I’ve been trying all day and have only gotten about 2-3 mLs of pepper mix down her). I won’t have tube for feeding til it comes in the mail, if we make it to that point.
Thanks for your time!

@TwoCrows Hello! I know this thread is old but I’ve got a similar issue and a quick question. Back story: Dewormed and two hens seem to have gape worm overload. Got sick after last day of deworming. The first died this morning but the second is stronger but looks to be headed in same direction. Not eating drinking or pooping and crop is not draining of liquid I’m giving via syringe.

My question is this: I’ve started giving the mixture of pepper and other spices you recommended. She’s only taking very little at a time. Should I only be giving this until I get it all down her or see improvement? I’ve been trying all day and have only gotten several mLs down her.

I was previously giving pedialyte (and trying kaytee hand feeding formula) because she’s definitely dehydrated.
Thanks for your time!
Oh gosh, I am so sorry you lost a hen this morning! :hugs Does the remaining hen have a crop issue? If this hen is really sick and dehydrated, I would either add heat or bring her inside.

Oh yes! Already done that! But should I only be giving the digestive mixture your recommended until I see improvement? Or should I not neglect the pedialyte? I’d love to get your opinion!

Does she have a crop issue? The spice mix will help with crop yeast, if she is only severely dehydrated, I'd stick with the pedialyte.

She’s dealing with some kind post deworming system overload and her crop is maybe emptying very slowly or not at all.
Ok thanks!
If this started right after worming, I'd stick to Pedialyte. Fluids will help flush her system of the toxic proteins the worms left in the intestines. Fluids, fluids and more fluids! :hugs

Give the intestines time to relax and move, hopefully soon. Keep us posted!
