hunting

ours started last Saturday, only heard 3, by 9 am it was flooding and didnt stop til yesterday afternoon late. Got over 4 inches on already flooded rivers, pretty much my main area will be totally under water in a couple days again now. It had just dryed up from another flood 3 weeks ago.... so much for opening weekend here. least I have some on my farm too, they'll have to do for now. I usually hold them til late season, but think they may be on the hit list now

Well I don't hunt turkeys so I have to look forward to next year. Spring/Summer for me is more about competition shooting. I've got 4 CMP matches, trap league and some local action pistol shoots on the calendar. Also hoping to buy a small piece of hunting land in Northern MN this summer as an investment. With the rate of return on timber/pasture land at current prices it's a no brainer if I can scrape up the down payment, plus I get to hunt on my investment instead of just get a 401 K performance report in the mail. Was in the process of buying one this winter then the **** furnace died so there went my down payment money. Have also been active in the 2A rights movement lately.

Also working on building a new hunting rifle this summer. Got the barreled action and the stock. Gonna build it up with the original 8mm military barrel and see how it shoots, if it's not up to par may re-barrel to 6.5x55 swedish. I just love that round. Good luck turkey hunters!

When I finish my rifle it should look something like this:

This is my "Hochsitz" rifle in .280 rem, I call it "The Death Ray" or "Thor" as it kills like a lightning bolt. Great shooter but a tad heavy for stalking through the woods

Nice pretty wood stock.

It's a beauty!

Can I join this thread? My dad and I go hunting all the time together, and I've shot a lot of animals in my lifetime. I definitely don't have a weak stomach haha. We don't do it for sport, we kill those animals to eat them. We also have a deer head mounted up on our living room and some stuffed wood ducks which cause people to not come over again...

But whatever! Whoops, I guess I got a little carried away haha.

TheCrazyClucker: We do the same thing we hunt to put meat on the table.

People who can't take a couple of ducks on the wall or a deer head don't need to come over again. I've got a Woodie, Hooded merganser and Bufflehead mounted. My cousin is a world-class waterfowl taxidermist and likes the rifles I build so that works out well (He's got a nice sporter 7X57 and a restocked .222 Sako I found for him). I don't need to hunt to feed myself but I like to. It's a sport that fills the freezer. If I didn't spend my money on hunting stuff I'd probably just waste it on TVs or Snowmobiles or something so the meat's still free in my book.

For anybody who likes the look of that stock, it's a pretty easy project to give your battered bolt action rifle a lot of class. Ordered the stock from Richards Microfit for about $125. The less fancy grades are about half that price, the really fancy ones up to 2x that cost. Lots of sanding, some minor fitting around the recoil lug with an exacta knife and cut the bolt handle notch with a rat-tail file. Finish is many coats of Boiled Linseed oil cut with 25% turpentine. Labor intensive but well worth the effort. Will turn a plain-jane or battered stock rifle into an heirloom. The thumbhole DRAMATICALLY improves offhand shooting accuracy.
