Hurricane Florence

Thanks. They are not bantams. One bantam fella and 5 big girls. Lol the cat carrier is a medium size, so I might could fit 2 girls in it. I wish I could figure out a bigger space . I'm racking my brain trying to figure it out. Half tempted to barscade my bathroom. But that would be hard trying to keep them in with everyone using the bathroom.
I do like the idea that @townchicks mentioned, go up. The dog is a potential problem of maybe knocking down a stack of chickens.

I have a cage similar to yours that I use as an isolation cage or broody breaker in my run. I have had 7 large fowl (including a huge rooster) willing pile up in there - chickens are weird, so your 5 hens will do o.k. for a couple of days. I would put the bantam rooster in the cat carrier - he may get squished.

Oh...looked at what I think is the "latest" info on the hurricane tracker - looks like it has been downgraded to a 2 and is deteriorating. If I understand correctly will land fall around Wilmington NC. Of course, something like this spreads far and wide - looks like it will track south (to you) then make it's way to me LOL

You just never know until it comes in - hopefully it will break up further.

Don't be deceived. even if it goes back down to a Cat 1, the biggest threat from Florence is gonna be Storm Surge and inland flooding from the 30-40 inches they are anticipating to fall. One other thing, even a TS can throw a lot of dangerous projectiles around that could easily take out a chicken. If it was me, I'd keep them in the house any way I had to until the worst of it was over.
Good luck. We're all praying for everyone up there.
:oops::fl

We raised our chicks in our only bathroom -- for months. (it was winter, and the coop wasn't finished) It was disgusting at the end, but it worked. Don't be surprised if you think you've lost some, only to find them roosting on the shower rod!

I saw someone else used those "over the ear" type of hospital masks as a chicken diaper. Just in case you relent, and have some chickens free ranging in a bedroom.

Any chance you could move the Chicken Tractor close to your house so it is safer?

Make sure to put it on the Leeward side of the house. And depending on where the hurricane eye is in relation to you, the winds can change directions 180°.
PS Windward side is the side the wind comes from. Leeward is the protected, downwind side. God bless y'all!

Almost forgot! How about letting them ride out the storm in your truck or car till the next day?

Y'all have been so helpful!!! I think I'm gonna try to put jack the rooster in the cat carrier and the girls in the big dog crate. Worst case is I barricade the dog in another room for a bit and let the girls out to stretch . I'm ventuing out for a last chance today maybe I can find something bigger. Not counting on it though. I just feel safer if they ate in the house with me and I know they are okay!! ❤️

The mask diaper works an a standard hen, as long as she's not overly big or super-fluffy. If you want to make them last longer, line them with a couple of super-thin panti-liners, just stick 'em to the mask. You need to check them VERY frequently, as pasty butt can set in quickly with a diaper to block the ... errr ... flow.

Cardboard boxes work, too. Just watch the dog.
