Hurricane force winds - coop destroyed - update on page 2

dlhunicorn - thanks for the suggestion. Doubt we could do it though. Our house is newer with the vinyl siding and anything we attach to it does permanent damage. If the weather ever clears up we'll get the coop righted and just use the cable anchors. That's the best bet here because this won't be the last big windstorm we ever have!

I really hate those horrible winds, the highest we've gotten is around 60 or so mph and I HATE IT!

Ugh, I am feeling your pain as well!

Last night our power went out again due to a wind storm that reeked havoc on the surrounding area. It was like a hurricane outside. Houses in the area lost shingles, had damage to windows, siding, etc. Barns were blown away. We didn't sustain any real damage, the barn doors were open this morning, and garbage had gone on a walk about. HOWEVER, the biggest amount of damage we had was our driveshed. Already on the lean, our 3 sided 1870's driveshed is leaning more, and one of the supporting beams is more on an angle. Also, the centre post has moved, and one of the trusses is gone. Roofing is missing. The building was in poor shape to begin with, but hoisting it back up would have done the trick with a new foundation. Unfortunately though, after the storm it is too far gone and we'll have to get a demo permit in the spring to take it down, hopefully saving any large beams. The upside is that it's really too big for what we need, has no foundation, and doesn't open the right way. Now we can at least build a new run-in shed up in the top field where the driveshed is.


Ahhh great, it's winding again outside. I hope my half-walled duck house is okay come morning. I should have put the trusses on this afternoon but I was cold!

Chick-a-dee - Hope your duck house made it through the night. We're supposed to have high winds again tomorrow, although not even half the speed of what turned over the coop. I've got New Year's day off and I think I'll day the 2nd off as well so we can spend a long weekend uprighting and fixing the coop.

Michigan - no worries. You had some major events going on yourself. Are the rest of your chicks okay? How is the weather in your neck of the woods. Heard there were some major power outages - did you have that?

Glad everyone is ok. We don't have the wind, thank goodness, because at -27°F I don't think my windchill chart goes that low!

I've given up on keeping the water from freezing... my biggest challenge now is keeping the eggs from freezing.

Hey, Tori - I heard it was getting mighty cold up there on the mainland. My boss just got back from Anchorage. We've been complaining because it's down to 22 degrees here!

Have you tried heated water bowls? I finally broke down and ordered some of the 1.5 gallon heated bowls from Premier 1. They work good so far. Not sure how they'd do in the minus temps though. I got to wear I use small, square plastic containers (like ziploc sandwich size) in the rabbit cages. They still freeze, but because they are plastic and not too deep, I can twist them like and ice tray, pop the ice out and refill it with fresh water.
