Hurricane Irene!

Only a CAT 4??? I've lived in FL my whole life exept on Galveston Island for the last three years. There is nothing "Only" about a CAT 4. Sorry. Ike was only a CAT 2 and wiped out 70% the island in '08. Not from wind but by water.

Irene is only gonna make it to Cat 4

I'm guessing you've never been in a hurricane

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saffir–Simpson_Hurricane_Scale#Category_4

Category 4 hurricanes tend to produce more extensive curtainwall failures, with some complete roof structural failure on small residences. Heavy, irreparable damage and near complete destruction of gas station canopies and other wide span overhang type structures are common.

Mobile and manufactured homes are leveled. These storms cause extensive beach erosion, while terrain may be flooded far inland. Total and long-lived electrical and water losses are to be expected, possibly for many weeks.[11]

Picture a Cat 4 hurricane as an F1 tornado, only 200 miles wide

Cool that's a good idea, I'll inquire that. I have used them before and they were wonderful with my doberman

Just seen this all over our news in the UK. Fingers crossed everyone affected (including the chooks!) comes out of it OK.

I remember one time when we were in Florida when we were small, getting one that seemed to be chasing us on video camera out the back of our people carrier. Exciting and very new to me at the time (I was only 9), but wouldn't have liked to have been around for the clean-up afterwards!

Hopefully Irene will stay away from the mainland and sweep off into the sea. Cat 4 is not great - and BBC news has just reported it is about 700miles wide?

Good luck everyone x

OMG they just said on the news for us in NC, if we're east of HWY 95 we should evac today

You must have misunderstood, since that's about 1/3 of the state.

The only evacuations I've heard of are the Outer Banks and some low lying areas along the sounds

Hurricane Irene
Forecasts show a powerful storm headed toward the North Carolina coast.

Gov. Perdue has declared a state of emergency for counties east of Interestate 95, and the storm is expected to hit North Carolina on Saturday.

North Carolina residents in the affected areas are encouraged to pay close attention to the storm and prepare appropriately.

I am also in the path. Luckily 1 coop can be easily moved and I have a few empty
rabbit hutches that will allow me to move all the ladies into the goat's stall.

But don't tell him, he doesn't like the chickens!

Filling up food and water and locking in the big girls/boys outside! 2 are still in my "Florida room" and should be fine. Here's hoping it's not as bad as it sounds!!!!

ETA: I'm in VA....30 miles from NC border, but more central....We're in the tropical storm area, looking at about 5 inches of rain (starting tomorrow...it rained today and we're supposed to get some storms tonight as well) and winds up to 50 mph I think....for now.....We all know how that can change!!

6 to 10 inches of rain coming for me, I don't think the wind will be a big deal, 40-50 MPH maybe. The 2 year old coop will get its first big test, the month old roof for sure! So far its been dry inside after rain/downpours. I am not worried, I will lock them up inside the coop and they will stay there until after the storm has gone by.
