Hurricane Irene!

The coop is still fine - we've gotten alot of rain and wind - sometimes gusting that shakes the windows & house - but otherwise we're still fine. Glad I brought the girls inside though - gives me peace of mind tonight when we're supposed to get worse and it will be too dark to want to chase them down and bring them in.

Bobbieschicks....we are watching it on TV and the heavy bands of rain seem to be crossing right over your area now. I suspect that the rains will continue for a while but the winds should not be hard enough to cause a great deal of damage where you are. It does seem to be weakening a bit and the predictions are that in a short while it will turn more East so the eye should be further away from your location. At least you still have power. The reports say 200,000 have lost power in VA

Good luck everyone, I hope the hurricane continues to loose strength, seems that flooding and tide surges will definitely occur near the coast.

If I was in the storm path, I would be forced to move our chickens inside, because the coop that I built in not secure in high winds.

How about moving the chickens into a spare bathroom or into the garage?

We're in central N.C. and have had very little rain but a lot of wind, gusting to 40 mph. You wouldn't think that would be a problem but we have power outages all over town from downed trees.

My DW was on the road to Raleigh an hour or so ago and said the rain was 'pelting' and the car almost got blown off I-40. Raleigh is 160 miles inland from where Irene made landfall at Cape Lookout.

Some friends in Wilmington report that they lost THREE roof shingles and no water damage, so that's a good report. They live about five miles inland.

Other friends near Morehead, Beaufort, Emerald Isle are probably not so lucky.



Chicken status: the girls are wandering around in the run, oblivious to the wind. Some are hunkered down napping while others are scratching and wandering.


I hope those in the path farther north are okay. Even though Irene's not as bad as they forecast she still packs a wallop.

I've been out of the house this afternoon(chicken farming!) but I just got word that Cape Lookout has survived the worst.
Sigh of relief.

Here in southern CT, it looks like the official word is that it'll be a cat 1 hurricane heading through my town late tonight/early tomorrow morning. I live at the top of a hill (no worries about flooding!), but under several massive trees. Given that my coop is only a month old, un-weather tested and not "winterized," my little flock is riding out the storm in my basement. I figure 24 hours in a damp, dark basement is better than potentially getting squashed by a tree in their coop overnight.

I've got a thick layer of shavings over a tarp and I made a makeshift roost out of a pair of sawhorses and a landscape timber so if the basement DOES get wet, at least they'll be able to get off the floor.

While we're on the subject of helping our flocks through the storm: My chickens were FREAKED out when we took them out of their coop and deposited them into the basement. My basement doesnt have windows and is pitch black when the lights are off. To help them calm dawn (and discourage jumping out of their pen!) I removed all but one bulb after I put them in the temporary pen so they could find each other, get a nibble and a drink, and settle into bed and then turned it off again for the night. Chances are good, we're gonna lose power. Are they going to be okay in the dark all day tomorrow? Or should I go out there with a flashlight and hope that its enough for them to find the food and water?
