Hurricane Preparedness!

i dont know if i came across to strong but if it did it wasnt meant to. just wanted you to not worry. i am getting the storm right now as we speak and its really not much of anything. it appeared at 5 in the morning with thunder and now its sort of just scattered rain here and there. tropical storm Erika should be something more to worry about it seems that this one is faster.
Oh not at all! I just wanted to keep this thread going regarding hurricanes in general, not just because of Danny...You said you were in PR right? I heard you guys were in need of some rain, hopefully Danny brought you enough! I guess they aren't always bad in that regard...

i do suggest the metal roofing. most people on the island use that when it comes to chicken coops or anything to do with farm animals. it seems to withstand the most. i also would cement the poles at least a foot or two into the ground. and i would use nails that are strong(i dont know if all nails are the same or not).

i would keep an eye on Erika though, that one does seem to be stronger than danny was.
the rain here has stopped and the sun is peeking out.

From my understanding, metal roofs will withstand hurricane winds better than other roofs, as long as the structure is sound. There are a lot of people in my area that are actually switching over to metal. Although, I don't know what kind of metal and if tin would hold up as well as what they are using for houses.

I think my ducks would be ecstatic in a hurricane! They don't care if it's thundering and lightening, they are always out playing in the worst storms...

You could probably come up with a battery backup for the brooder. And if you have to take them with you, as long as there's several of them, they should be able to keep each other warm for a little while...

Well hopefully we won't have any storms that would force us to swim, anytime soon! And hopefully we can come up with a plan that will protect us and the poultry...

:) im glad you responded! Im playing alot about it because it is a Very Deep Seated fear, and id love to help u keep this up, so we can get as many ideas as possible! I would guess that the new metal roofs your seeing are aluminum, which would be Alot more durable than this tin. A plywood and shingle roof would be better in MY situation :) i consulted my Daddy, cuz u got my mind turnin! Im worried about the wind taking my coop roof flying, and if it was built with shingles, and the shingles were liquid nailed at the "loose" end... I now know that it would be better than this tin situation.

On the water rising: i have a tiny river close by and the water would have to be above that 15 ft bank by 4 ft before we had a Standing problem. Flash flooding is my concern with these property levels like this. Over the next yr i intend to make a much needed higher coop floor. Regular thunderstorms make it slop and i have to get em off the ground. We have started by building up cut grass in a lasagna style deep bedding system.

Yup, the ducks would totally call it play time, thats why i joked about it. :) really the problem would be predators for them, as soon as the storm died a lil things would be coming out to eat :O The only cool chances they have to play right now are after dark and while its rainin, and they take the latter very seriously!

Battery operated packs would work, and thats the plan w the fish tank... Why didnt i think of that?!

Again, thank you for your insight in my situation! Hopefully we Can All have the best plans in place, and we wont have a bad enough storm to need to swim!

I will add, in case of a Mandatory evac... I have 5(or so?) Kennels that could transport poultry to safty, but only a small four door car :( also my flock is 4 silk bantam all diff breeds, 6 assorted layers, 3 quail, 7 Cajuga ducks and 3 B Red turkeys... i would need help in a bad way, and theres someone i need to go ask for help, as part of the plan making. Moving our flock would be a nightmare.

Okay guys I am new here to byc, I just move to North Florida from South Florida. The storms here don't seem as strong on the East Coast however we do receive very heavy straight line winds. My coop is cemented into the ground as well as covered with shingle roof however I used plywood sides which open and close my question is being the case, what should I do to help prevent the heavy rains from entering my covered Run. I appreciate anybody's assistance on this question today is August 27th and we do appear to have a storm on the way towards us thanks in advance for everybody's input

Welcome to BYC!! Maybe some pictures of your current coop would help so we know what your dealing with. Are you worried the wind will open the plywood sides? We use slide locks to close ours, although we could probably use some reinforcements on ours as well...

We're in the north-central part of FL and while I don't think we are in much danger from a hurricane, this is good reading for storms that knock out our power. Really glad to stumble on this thread.

If there isn't something in the Learning Center on disaster prep for our animals, there should be. No matter where you live, there's always some kind of weather to deal with (I grew up in "tornado alley" myself). I think it would be helpful to a lot of people to know how to safeguard their poultry, whether dealing with hurricanes, snow storms, etc.

This is important stuff! Thanks to all for sharing your tips!

erika is on her way to PR. we got SOME of her storm last night. over in dominica they are getting flooding and so far 4 people died.
