Hello, I am a new member and this is my first post. We are in the design phase of our coop and going with a Wichita Cabin Coop, with some personal modifications. Living on the east coast of Florida, we have our share of hurricanes. Does anyone have some ideas on hurricane proofing to keep it stable in the winds and not end up in my neighbors yard or the river. Thank You

Hi, welcome to BYC!

As a former Floridian, I understand your concern. I think you'll get some really helpful info from your state thread:
Florida

Not sure there is such a thing as "hurricane proof" but a coop able to withstand strong winds and keeping rain out is doable (I believe).

Best of luck to you!

I live on the coast of NC and we get 'em, too. My coop has done ok--the main things it has going for it are that it's very, very heavy (coop and run), it has overhangs to block rain from the ventilation openings along the ceiling and the roof is connected with these braces that are supposedly for hurricane home construction.

That said, when anything more than a Category 1 is coming, I bundle them into my shed, which has survived 30+ years of weather, and board up the window. There's a poop fest to clean up once the storm passes, but it works. :)

I do not live where we experience the wet of hurricanes, but we regularly have hurricane force winds. I recommend contacting your local building department, or looking at their info online (some have better websites than others). Look at foundation requirements for sheds. This will give you an idea as to what is really needed to keep your structure on the ground and how it should be built. Hopefully others can guide you in dealing with the rain and appropriate drainage.
