Hurt leg, not sure how or what to do.

Not sure what my young polish hen did to her leg, just noticed her limping last night. Washed it last night and some scales came off, and swelling extends to her foot. I put some red scarlet oil and honey on it. She won’t put weight on it at all today, although she’s in a dog crate so there’s not far to go. Any ideas of what it could be or how to help her?

It looks like it may be broken, and possibly a compound fracture through the skin. The skin could also look broken because she got it cut as well. Do you have a vet who could get an xray? I would separate her into a dog crate in a cool shady spot close to others. Splinting it would be a good idea. Betadine or chlorhexidene are good for wound care. Splint with soft padding, something stiff such as a finger splint bended or popsicle sticks, and vet wrap strips or tape. It can take several weeks for a broken bone to heal, and a callus will form. The picture below shows a finger splint bent as a proper splint, and below that is a video with a chicken being splinted in the aame region:

Well just make sure you try to keep the foot from getting infected. But do not use human medicine as they can cause the wound to worsen. Also, you may want to somehow wrap the wound with a bandage. Previously, one of my easter eggers also got this before. Some scales also came off, but after wrapping it in a small bandage for a few days it healed entirely. Just pay close attention and try not to let it get infected.

Thank you so much. Would she be able to lay down with the splint on ?

I made a splint for her and put some red scarlet oil/medicated honey from my vet under a telfa pad on the wound part. Thank you so much Eggcessive! I’m hoping this works.
