Husband brought home a rooster :( Couple of question.

Your girls will be happier with a Rooster.

The fertile egg thing is not a problem. Although it always makes me laugh

when people say they don't want to eat fertile eggs because it grosses them out.

Agreed. Plus, blood spots and meat spots can happen with or without a rooster as Speckledhen pointed out. Some breeds and some individual hens are more prone to them. I used to fish them out before cooking, now I don't.
A rooster provides a whole 'nother dimension to a flock. He's the hens protector, provider and peacekeeping. I will always have a rooster with my flock.

When I bought my pullets I got 2 accidental roos. I thought oh no. I loved them they were friendly. A bad bad weasel killed both of them:hit so now I got another roo, the girls like him he is nice also. I have another roo coming from chickenstock.

It's good to know about the eggs, really didn't want to have to worry about that. Will keep him as long as he doesn't hurt any of the chicks. They went to separate sides of the coop tonight, new rooster and hen to one side, the rest to the other, lol. Hopefully they will get more fond of each other soon.

Husband only finished the coop last weekend, and it's already too small as he keeps bringing home more chickens! He'll have to get building again

Thanks again

It is usually good practice to quarantine the new additions for a month, just in case.

HI, My rooster experience is pretty much what folks have already said...........
I love ours...........we have hawks and coyotes.Boots stands gaurd by the hour and calls alarm at the first sight of a problem. The hens run to the barn and stay there till he gives them an all clear.
Also, we had a new rooster.......not my friend.he spurred me every time he got a chance.once leaving a fairly big hole in my calf. Boots took him to the ground and held him there if he saw the young one coming after me.
I give him tons of treats.....he sits on my husbands lap in the evening.
Hope all goes wel for you.

They should be really kept apart from chicks until the chicks are about of equal size. That goes for both roosters and hens. Both can kill a chick.
