Husband is really going to kill me over my chicken math skills!!!

I can't seem to get DH to understand chicken math at all. I lost 5 babies so went to tractor supply and got 7 new babies I still think I am short a few what do you guys think maybe 4 more.

We started 2 years ago with 12. Gave away 9 of those. Today we have, hang on let me count, ummmm, 31, plus two dozen in the bator and another dozen eggs coming at some point when the seller's Showgirls decide to lay. So yeah. Chicken math, indeed!

Now I have to take the dog run from the Standard Poodle and secure it for the 10 SLWs and Production Reds that need to get out of my garage!

I bought five more yesterday so we are up to like 13. My husband just sighed and asked how many nesting boxes we will need in the coop. LOL, I told him that I only intended to keep six, the bantams don't count, and we are giving away or selling the rest. LOL. He loves me. He will make it a little big though. I just don't want to end up with so many that we can't control the situation. I don't want the city snooping around.

yes, we are all a little 'nuts'... at least I can say "but honeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyy I failed math in college once a long long time ago, so it's not really my fault. I told them only 4 chicks. Can't help it he gave me 8

My first 12 last spring my dh said "WHAT! thought we were only going to do a 'few'. I told him that only half of them would probably survive. that was his 'few'. chuckle chuckle... (10 survived) then when I came home from Buffalo from the SPCA with 2 birds and he looked at me kinda wierd I said "but hhhhhhoneeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyy they were abused and left to die in the middle of the city, i had to adopt them and give them a loving home" (needless to say it was a 6 hour round trip to save my two girls)

then when I came home with the order of 6 chicks from Meyers last Monday that i was supposed to have cancelled he started to turn a little shade of red.

the next day I ran up to TSC and got 3 ducklings, came home and plopped them into his non animal loving arms.

"but honnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy these are for you!" HOLY COW. I didnt know he had always wanted a duck. no way... talking about lucky!!!!!?????

so now I ended up with 9 chickens 4 chicks, and 3 ducklings.....

Started with 3 hens for eggs and got rid of those due to time issues, When i decided that i wanted more a year later I bought 6 eggs off ebay and hatched 3 hens out of those that i kept to replace the others. I gained another 2 from a friend who said they needed a home or they were going to die, 1 passed away so i bought another 6, A couple died and i gave a few of those away leaving me with 1, I liked the look of a pair i saw at a show so i bought them .. bred those and hatched another 4 .. bought another 2 babies to add to the "orpington family" im working on, In between that i got 3 ducks and im constantly stockpiling eggs just incase i get a broody, I dont really have the room for more ..but i can never say never


3 - 3 + 3 + 2 - 1 + 6 - 5 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 3 = Still not enough !

It sounds more confusing when written than it does in my head lol

I just wanted a "few" for eggs. Chicken coop wasn't quite ready yet, so I wasn't looking. Went to TSC for Black Oilers for my bird feeders and came home with chicks, forgot the Black Oilers. One tank had 13 Ameracaunas and the other tanks had Barred Rocks and ISA Browns, all straight run. I took all 13 Ameracaunas, 5 Barred Rocks and 5 ISA Browns. Let's see, that's 23. I lost 1 Ameracauna to a dog (my own!), that's 22. Then I picked up 10 Black Copper Marans, that's 32. Two of the Barred Rocks are roosters, find homes for them, that makes 30. Need to downsize a bit from there so will rehome 1 Barred Rock and 3 ISA Browns. That makes 26. If I end up with too many roosters from the 13 Ameracaunas and the 10 Black Copper Marans, will have to rehome them and replace with 3 hens per each rooster, right? Let's see, that makes . . . . .

Luckily I have no DH to contend with, just my own OC self!

I don't even have mine yet, but I want silkies and a few other varieties too. Dh says no we will only get 6 (originally3) for eggs. They must be good layers. His friend is the one that suggested more than 3 to start hehehe. We really can't go over board though because we aren't supposed to have chickens at all on our property, lucky our neighbors are great.

Well my BF's favorite little crested died yesterday morning and he was devastated. I asked if he wanted me to get him another one, he said no that he was sure he could find another little fuzzy to love. Well me being the loving GF I am went to the feedstore after work and happened to buy 2 little grey bantams (assorted because they had no crested). I brought them out and said these are for you. He loved them of course.

Well then today I needed another feeder and they so happened to be selling chicks...who would have thought?! I bought 3. I think I may just sneak them in though. And on Saturday hopefully we will be taking a 4 hour round trip to pick up our marans and wellies......gotta love them.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem

I'm waiting for DH to return home from work to find that I ended up with 9 chicks instead of the 6 we agreed on. My youngest told me on and off this morning "Daddy is going to be upset when he sees them all". I figured out of the nine we would end up with a couple roos and 4 of the chicks are bantams so can't they pass as being two chicks since they are so small:/
