A man had white rock and RIR mix which i think are called amber stars and he said they wont breed true. What does that mean. Not the same color? Cant lay eggs? Not fertile? Here are the eggs from that cross. He said the cream colored ones are from the older hens and they lay specked and brown also. I thought i could cross my RIR with a WR and have a couple of speckled egg laying hens.

I think what he means is that if you try to hatch those eggs, they won't produce chicks that have the same characteristics as the parent birds. Maybe different colors in eggs and plumage will result, but I'm sure those birds will be fertile and lay eggs, just not the nice speckled eggs you have there.

The cross of the RIR and the WR with produce chicks that can be sexed by their color when hatched. Not breeding true in this case means that if you breed the offspring of this cross together, the resulting chicks will not be color sexable as chicks.

But the amber links should be excellent layers and they will be fertile, though I don't know about the speckled eggs, they can vary depending on the bird, but I would think they would be brown.

It means that same as breeding anything the first generation is predictable anything after that can be???

AA x BB always gives AB
AB x AB you may get AA AB BA BB

This is extremely simplified, but hope you get the idea.

Oh,okay. Well that makes it nice that you can sex the babys by color. They sure do make excellent egg layers, the eggs are so Large.

Thank you
