Hybrids... Just a friendly Conversation please.

I'm okay with hybrids, as long as the goal is for a healthy, functional animal. I once saw a program on TV where this woman was breeding "twisty cats"--severely deformed cats, because she thought how they gimped around was "cute"

I thought it was horrible and sad!

For horses, the Friesian breed has seen the effects of close proximity inbreeding with individuals suffering from dwarfism, allergies, anhidrosis and exczema. I think it 's a great idea to add new genetics to help these horses out.

Gorgeous Macaws! I have a scar on my wrist to this day from an old blind scarlet that I foolishly tried to save from my cat when he fell off his perch. Oy veh. Never pick up a frightened psittaciforme without gloves on!

Anyway, regarding hybrids. No worries! I have a purebred horse and a mutt horse. I've had purebred dogs and mutt dogs. As long as there's truth in advertising when sending off hybrids as breeding stock to a new home, I don't see an ethical issue there. I do see an ethical issue with allowing domestic animals to be breeding stock if you don't have concrete plans for the offspring, therefore I support spaying and neutering of animals that have a high risk of unsupervised breeding.

And I have my suspicions that "designer breeds" is a nice name for "accidental breeds" that allow them to be sold for higher prices! But I'm absolutely convinced that I could be wrong about that....

Hmm. That's what happens when I get excited about some gorgeous birds and stop reading the post after page 1.

Hybrids, cross species stuff, I know it happens in nature, again, it depends on what the goal is. But people who want to own exotic animals, especially animals that are part wild, part domestic, need to have a healthy respect for the lack of domesticity as a characteristic, and have the knowledge base and the resources to properly care for them.
