Hi
Just got our chicks day before yesterday. We already lost 2. A couple of the others seem to have pasty butt.
My question here is they at tractor supply said to put hydro hen in their water which we have been doing. On the bag it said to have 2 sources of water. One with hydro hen and one without.
Is this the normal practice?
Thank you in advance. I’m a nervous new mama🤣

What is the heat source in your brooder?
Can you post pictures?
To answer your question, yes, you should always have fresh clean water available at all times.

I have to admit I'm too lazy to offer 2 sources of water (with and without) so... if you only have 1 waterer, just offer the hydro hen water.

The pasty butt is a separate issue. Check at least twice a day for it and make sure to keep clearing it when you see it. Pasty butt may be aggravated by heat, so if you're using a heat lamp in your brooder, you may want to reduce temperatures to the low end of the recommended temperature range for the ages of your chicks.

Make sure you keep the heat in the corner of your brooder, so if the chicks need to cool off they can get away from it. If they’ve been acting like they’re trying to get away from your heat source, then it may be too hot.

I cut a water jug to clean pasty butt. I hold chick in my hand with butt facing outward and soak bottom in warm water for a 3 minutes and gently squeeze poo and dip in water for another minute if needed.
I didn't have to use it with my current batch of chicks🐤. GC
