Hypochodriacs. Do you know any?

I can't say I know any hypochondriacs but I know a lot of people who think they're smarter than doctors. Always claiming some one is a hypochondriac inspite of a doctors diagnosis. Do you know anyone like that? I once had a co worker ask me if I was really sick, even though the doctor had performed surgery. Guess the doctor didn't know what he was doing but this co worker with a high school education did! You don't know anyone like that do you?

I like when they ask, "have you tried this or that?" Even though the doctor has prescribed something else. I have no idea why anyone would spend money on a doctor when they can just go to their co-workers or family and get diagnosed. I don't know why anyone would go to medical school when clearly they don't need to.

And now with the internet it's even worse!

Show me a man who checks behind a door when he enters a room and I'll show you a man who has stood there.

I will say this too. I've learned never to greet someone with "How are you?, but "it's nice to see you". That way you don't have to listen to how they really are or if your of the opinion that they are full of it, how they think they are.

Hubbo is. I hate for him to get in a conversation/competition about illnesses and surgeries at the Dr's office with someone else waiting. He ends up with whatever they have had that he hasn't. He's having a hysterectomy next month.

Maybe they don't know how to respond? I get awkward feeling with discussing someones ill health. Sometimes how its being treated is all I can think of.

Well when I started to become sick doctors thought that I was a hypochondriac. And after a while of hearing it I started to believe it myself. Then I went blind and they all went "Hmmmmmmm, I think she might have something wrong with her!" Sometimes it is s real illness, and sometimes not so much, but I think its best to check before assuming what others first told you. Believe me, I learned the hard way

I think that the term "hypochondriac" has been over-used by modern media, and now everyone wants to go around diagnosing everyone with THAT.

Mental health issues are actually less common and much harder to diagnose than body health issues... so it's definitely something that should be left for the experts to diagnose. ETA: and by experts I do NOT mean MD's

People who actually are hypochondriacs are not that way because they want attention, but because something is wrong in their brain that makes them think something is wrong in their body. That's not a laughing matter, not something they can control any more than someone with a body disability can control theirs.

X2 that sometimes something IS wrong.... just not always easy to find out what it is.

Been a nurse for 18 years....I've known quite a few. These are the most frustrating people to deal with because they do not WANT to get well as their "illness" brings them the attention they seek, so no matter what you offer in the way of treatment, it just doesn't ever seem to work.

Imagine that.

The sad thing? Very often a lifetime of hypochondria will actually lead to actual illness due to an abuse of meds, a sedentary lifestyle, self-inflicted anxiety over no one pampering them quite enough, etc. I've met quite a few women who ended up on a ventilator due to abuse of pain killers, anti-anxiety meds and bronchodilators(inhalers). These folks have abused pain killers and anti-anxiety meds for a lifetime, so when they really need them they have little effect.

My brother. Feel perfectly fine and then I mention a disease when he doesn't feel 100% and then he thinks he has that disease or several diseases.
