Been a nurse for 18 years....I've known quite a few. These are the most frustrating people to deal with because they do not WANT to get well as their "illness" brings them the attention they seek, so no matter what you offer in the way of treatment, it just doesn't ever seem to work.
Imagine that.
The sad thing? Very often a lifetime of hypochondria will actually lead to actual illness due to an abuse of meds, a sedentary lifestyle, self-inflicted anxiety over no one pampering them quite enough, etc. I've met quite a few women who ended up on a ventilator due to abuse of pain killers, anti-anxiety meds and bronchodilators(inhalers). These folks have abused pain killers and anti-anxiety meds for a lifetime, so when they really need them they have little effect.
